First time I encountered it, I thought a horse must have done a shit nearby.

I freely admit that the glorious smell of durian, described as rotten onions with a hint of sewage
"Onions and antibiotics" was the description that I heard. It's the only time I've seen an adult pull the same face as a baby being given its first spoonful of pureed carrot.

I used to work in the same building as a Chinese couple who ran a wholesaler for nail salon supplies. They were very partial to a bit of durian, quite often the building would be in a fog of some sort of olfactory battle between acetone and raw sewerage. It didn't help that my old boss had no sense of smell but was incredibly flatulent.

Pfft all you chatting shit about some ripe durian and fermented tofu. It's just foods. Foods that there are specific bylaws around transporting, but just foods nonetheless.

I first encountered durian in Kuala Lumpur in about ‘97. We went to a restaurant and they actually had a separate dining area for people who wanted the durian dessert.

Stinky tofu... the smell reaches into the depths of my stomach and wraps its pungent hands around anything inside me, threatening to drag it out of my body at speed. Burning flesh smells nicer.
In contrast, durian is unpleasant but doesn't make me want to put corks in my nose. -

Had to film some Swedish footballers attempting to eat this once (they both refused) and I can wholeheartedly agree with everything everyone in that video said about the smell.
It just has that rich, sweet corruption smell of something rotting/dying, but also mixed in with vomit.Don’t get any of it on your clothes, it does not wash away easily..

I've tried it snd didn't enjoy it very much... Have you done the deep breath test with stinky tofu??? That smell on a 35 degree day with 90% humidity and a hangover is something to behold.
