my average heart rate was 174 IIRC, this run from Tuesday felt like I was about to die when I hit 174, so there's clearly some work left to do
How long since you could do a sub 20 5k? Because HR is not a reliable indicator, especially as you get older. I've seen 198 BPM back in my road racing days, if I go over 170 BPM these days I feel like my heart is about to burst out of my ribcage. I'm averaging about one beat per minute less per year for cross races, based over the past 5 seasons or so.

Stating the obvious, but it also varies significantly with freshness / fatigue.

i don't and thats been my problem - I' more than eager to get out now but have no desire too
Never got a routine that suited me and not the family - i did a few sessions on the turbo but at night mainly once the kids had gone sleep most timesmaybe some of you guys on here could help me here - could reconsider keeping the turbo instead of selling it

Personal progression and stress relief/mental health, I've played sport in one form or another since under 10s rugby (Currently 26). Now i row and cycle, my main competition is in rowing so I've focused mainly on that for the last few years. I train to keep up/out perform against my squad members, I love being part of a crew and always want to be my best for all. I'm not the best at following a firm training plan but mix indoor rowing workouts with trainerroad sessions of late which i have seen a lot of results when on the water, but that might be from going from 81.5kg at the start of lockdown to 73.7kg now and have had very little difference in power/splits (erg).
Focusing more on cycling, I love the result training has on speed but I really couldn't care less about Strava segments, it's more about how I feel when riding the bike. I do enter the odd competition on the bike, with my first 10TT coming up on Wednesday. The one thing i don't like about doing all of this training is the expectation of others/peers, I work with a few cyclists and they put a lot of pressure on me with riding e.g they think I can do a 22minute 10 on a road bike.... So for this reason I have the majority of my sessions private on Strava.
Nothing beats a hard training session when you push yourself to being sick though :)

And still you appear! Why do you train?

To make sure the kids don't beat him.

Same. Can’t believe how much mine’s plummeted. 170bpm used to mean barely warmed-up. It’s race o’clock now.

Speaking of vomming. I've never vommed and have really tried. Clearly not hard enough.
(Though I think you're a vommer or you're not) -

Looking at Strava my fastest was 6 years ago, when I was 38.

Never thrown up, but have made nose bleed and caused hot wax to bubble out my ears.

My fastest was this year at 45. Sub 20.
You can do it. -

I just cry.

Tears are just failure leaving the body.

• #117
If I cry a lot will I have no more failure?
-
• #118
You will have puffy eyes.

I think vomiting is a genetic thing - either you are a vommer or you're not.

Oh great, now I have to clean those rollers you sold me!

I haven't "trained" for a while, as in doing specific workouts aimed to improve certain areas. At the moment I just ride for pleasure, sometimes I feel like going hard, but not very often. It's just lack of motivation at the moment - I don't know what I'm training for and prefer to spend time with my family.
I used to train because I like racing and when racing I want to win.

I do it to discover hideous truths like I can lose over 3lbs in sweat over 90 minutes.

prefer to spend time with my family.
I am in this space too, but if I ride hard or long I am wiped out to do any childcare after .. how do you manage it? am I just weak? same goes for @Chalfie @youramericanlover

It's just hard to find time to go out and ride, but if I find it, I don't have any problems to look after my daughter. Sometimes I fall asleep, but it's normally ok - she'll wake me up if she needs me.
He doesn't normally, he just races.
