  • yes I was reflecting on my post within my post, if you need to learn my language, refer here: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/299558/

  • Bikes are not toys they are vehicles

The majority of bikes are vehicles, but they are also cheap, robust, and use parts and assembly techniques tried and tested over decades.
The majority of bikes above a certain price point (probably somewhere between £500 and £1000) are toys, sold on the basis of novel functions and performance at the cost of reliability.
Very occasionally bikes fail in a way which hurts people. Mostly cyclists hurt themselves by attempting to ride beyond their own limits, or get hurt by motor vehicle operators attemptingto drive beyond theirs.

  • racist abuse from Michelle Arthur's friends

Is there some kind of award for the greatest depth of hole in which a man has been discovered still digging?

  • Cervelo engineers (Rinard?) changed their published tolerance +/- for their BB to avoid warranty claims to such an extent I think it was SKF said you could not use their bearings in such a poorly specced bearing seat as it would kill the bearings.

  • Is that an engineering or financial decision though?

  • Is there some kind of award for the greatest depth of hole in which a man has been discovered still digging?

ring up Guinness they'd be well keen on this i reckon

  • Bikes don’t kill people, engineers do?

  • Agree forks are different matter. Has anyone died or been injured due to poor tolerances on the bb shell, causing creaking?

  • I can feel like committing murder when on a club ride all the bikes are purring like a swarm of mechanical bees except the one person whose bb never gets serviced, and week in week out it disrupts the harmony with its creaks and clunks

  • Has anyone died or been injured due to poor tolerances on the bb shell, causing creaking?

BB shell I don't know. But crank failure which I guess could be exacerbated by it, definitely. Anyway I've been steering clear of Cannondale forever you'll never catch me on one.

  • All bb standards apart from BSA are rubbish. Misogyny is wrong. End thread.

  • Millions of bearings have died, taken far too young too, because of these poor manufacturing practices.

  • I don't get it. Either the bike functions properly or it doesn't. If I buy a new frame and it starts killing BBs every month because it's on the piss I will get a refund. If it's not on the piss, I won't be asking for a refund. I'm not going to measure it up to check though. Who else is going to measure it to check and where's this tolerance limit increase you're talking about? Some companies are going "oh, our bike only kills your BB in 8 months so no refund"?

  • Some are so bad you can't actually fit a BB in them in the first place. Hambini also makes custom BBs to compensate for terrible manufacturing and companies like Boardman who refuse a warranty claim on a brand new frame with BB shell that was undersized, oval and forward/back and high/low out of alignment.

  • Was the bike tested to whatever standards are required?

Was the fault due to poor engineering, poor tooling or poor QC?

1/10000 ain't great but it's better than the Eurofighter and isn't this the slag Hambini off thread? Actually what's the Eurofighter got to do with anything? Do androids dream of electric sheep?

  • Such as? If that's the case you or the shop aren't going to accept the product then are you? I mean, if manufacturers want to ship that kind of shit out they've got to expect for it to cost them more than they make in terms of returns and damage to reputation.

  • Some companies are going "oh, our bike only kills
your BB in 8 months so no refund"?

No, they bugger you about getting the shop to fit new bearings a few times, then eventually if you complain enough they measure it and then they say we don't care how quickly it knackers bearings, it is within tolerance so you can do one.

    No

Careful. One does not simply argue with Hippy

  • All bb standards apart from BSA are rubbish

And BSA isn't even a description of a BB, it's the name of a defunct Birmingham Small Arms manufacturer who also made bicycles and motorbikes. Being British, they manufactured most of their bottom bracket shells with BSC threads.

The same thread form, but not pitch, is now used in the majority of bicycles in the form of the ISO standard threaded bottom bracket.

  • I don't see how adjusting documented tolerances works though. If the bike is piss it would go back to the shop. If shops around the world have to deal with all these returns, presumably they will stop selling these bikes because they're more trouble than they're worth, then what?
Or do people just keep buying them hoping something changes?

  • No one refuses my warranty claims...

  • Interesting tactic. Presumably everyone that's been the victim of this has refused to do further business with the shop and/or manufacturer, settled in small claims court and bought a steel gravel bike instead? If I'd spent a large amount of money on a frame that turns out to be wonky I don't think I'd stop until I had a refund or replacement and I'd certainly be making a lot of noise about the company that was trying to fuck me over.

I wonder how many of these issues are manufacturer fault vs. how many are poor initial installation by mechanics not reaming where needed, not using proper locking compounds, etc?
