I paod for a webcam at Viking nearly two weeks ago, it was never dispatched and i cannot get hold of them by phone or email. I think a lot of people are in the same boat as us!

Mrs and I both both got huge mouse mats for WFH and it's a game changer - so much nicer to work on. well comfy.

Good news is that webcam rocked up today, so Scan have done ok there.
Bad news is that it seems less good than the built in cam on my work laptop, which seems surprising for an £85 stand alone device (MS LifeCam Studio).
Ah well. It works, and it means I don't have to peer into a laptop for hours on end.

My 10 year old 2nd gen i7 2700k is running awfully hot. I'm sure the AIOs pump has failed but I may as well those the opportunity to upgrade.

This is the plan, I have all the storage I need, a GTX1080 and a perfectly good case. 140mm fan is to replace the OEM exhaust and the 120mm's are for pushing air in.
Anything look out of place before I order?

Okay - I've got my old desktop PC (about 10 years). What should I do with it? I'm struggling to give it away. I don't really have the space for it as a reserve but I've got a reserve laptop which is much more practical.
How to dispose of it? Take it apart and drill through the hard-drive?
Any fun things to do with it? I was tempted to use it to turn my TV into a smart TV but the computer makes a pretty loud buzzing sound.

You could save £100 by not going so noctua crazy.
-
• #6033
Noctua are the tits though. In terms of longevity and noise levels. Totally agree that they are priced too high.
One of my 3d printers cost me £175 to buy and the first thing I did was put £100 of Noctua fans in it. Went from 88db to 44db @1m !

Y u no go water cooled? Even if Noctua are the tits I've got this Corsair Hydro H60 and am very happy with it. Costs less and looks better than that massive CPU cooler and is presumably quieter too?
You can swap out the fan for a Noctua one ;)
-
• #6035
Just to play devils advocate, the mid range Corsair water cooling exhaust fans in my PC are way noisier than the same sized Noctua fans on my 3d printer and I had to swap them out after 18 months due to a fan failure. Silent, water cooling is not.
No contest on the thermal efficiency front though. Water cooled every time. I think my i7 is overclocked by about 45% and I dont think it ever goes about 60 degrees under load.

Noctua are the tits though.
This
@Fox @Stonehedge I already have a Corsair H80. Believe it or not the noctua is actually better at cooling and quieter.

The aio is cleaner looking, I admit, but I don't look inside my case much...
-
• #6037
If I wasn't an overclocker, I wouldn't be water cooling.
-
• #6038
Hmmm I probably will end up over locking, I didn't originally with my i7, but I have now. I use it as a way to extend the usefulness of the pc. Are you using a custom loop or an aio?
-
• #6039
I think its one of these, or very similar. Definitely dual fan and AIO.
Fact check my belief that water cooling has greater thermal efficiency, my opinion is based on personal experience which could be circumstantial given that I don't build many PCs.
-
• #6040
You're not really playing devil's advocate cos I think we're all agreed Corsair fans are noisier!
But like I said you can swap them out. My Corsair Hydro H60 only needs one fan so one Noctura fan vs. two Noctura fans on the NH-U12A...

Even if their test results are right - and tbh, tl;dw the whole thing and I find it hard to take that guy seriously because he has the distinct air of a virgin who still lives with his parents - they used the stock fans, which are noisy. Plus I still reckon having a massive warm lump of metal blocking off a load of air flow within your case is not great for your overall system thermals, CPU aside.
Also I'm pretty sure that the failure of my last motherboard had quite a bit to do with a combination of it not having a key motherboard screw hole and having the weight of a massive Thermalright Ultra 120 hanging off it...
The H60 does the job for me anyway.

I think I'm going to stick with the NH-U12A. Worst case is furth down the road I get a 240mm AIO and I'll have £50 of noctura fans already to stick on it to make the thing quiet.
Honestly if you heard how loud my machine is atm....😅

This is the route that led me to buy a full size tower case for better airflow until it arrived and I realised it's nearly as tall as my desk.
-
• #6044
I have a ATX case at the moment so I could, in theory, top mount a 360mm rad.
Currently my 120mm AIO rad sits at the back but, maybe top venting would give better air flow -
• #6045
I'm doing two front fans, aio out the top, one fan out the back and psu out the bottom.
The Noctua will be fine and make sure to use those rubber fan holders rather than screws cos they help the noise a lot. -

Get this one it's brocken.

I've got two fans too, one pushes air over to the GPU, one over the drives to the PSU.
Will order today, I'm excited.

PC's plugged into TVs are the way forward. Much more useful than smart tvs
-
• #6049
I use a steamlink so pc can just be extended to the tv and then you can tab out of steam and do whatever, it works really well.

Man, I am really struggling to understand people saying simple things at the moment. Sorry about that.
Ok. Seems a bit of a piss take but I won't mind if it turns up some time this year.
