  • hope Japan suffers from it for a long time

Well, old wounds and all that I guess.

  • Maybe we just try a legally binding form of isolation before we turn to an armed military?

  • Hah. Never really had this place down as welcoming of authoritarianism and martial law either.

  • Now I remember why I rarely read the news here in China.

So there are xenophobes in China too. Shocked, I am, just shocked. Perhaps she had not heard that the authorities in Shanghai no longer foot the bill for quarantine hotel stays?

Secondly, you do know why some people in northern China as well as in places like Nanjing still harbour anger toward the Japanese? Not that that´s an excuse of course.

  • She said "who do they think they are, it's not a hotel!" - I mean, it literally is a hotel. She was also upset that they asked for bottled water and said they should have drunk the tap water... Pretty sure she wouldn't drink tap water. She's just repeating the very anti-foreigner news that's being heavily promoted atm.

  • I dunno. Keep it as advisory but having the army knocking about might persuade people to take it more seriously. Not sure massive fines is the answer.

  • Sadly you are all likely to be victims of a reaction to Trump’s xenophobia.

  • I saw a meme suggesting that Putin was offering a choice to the Russian people:

    1. Stay at home for 15 days; or
    2. Stay in prison for 5 years.

Not sure if there is any validity to that but it does point to the choice that may soon be available to us.

  • She definitely knows that quarantine hotels are self-paid. And yes I do know why very many Chinese people hate the Japanese (I live in China/speak Chinese/studied Chinese history) and while obviously it's no excuse, as you say, I also cannot imagine being able to forgive and forget if I or my family had gone through the absolute horror the Japanese inflicted on China in the 1930s.

  • Am I missing something? Isn't the current guidance here social distancing?

From .gov it doesn't look like that precludes leaving the home.

    /genuine question

  • If this doesn’t do the trick, then what?

Have Whitty get arse-faced before a news conference, then: "now listen you cunts, ..." It would do a world of good for his own mental health at this hour of peril.

  • I recently saw that film on Netflix of Prime about the massacre of Nanking.

    Beyond comprehension of awfulness.

  • ... if imprisoned won’t be able to keep safe distance anyway.

Imprisonment in the home, house arrest. Fines for leaving. Oh hang on ...

We probably all need an app for tracing our movements/interactions, linked to our bank account and showing our privileges grade.

  • Did wonder about this.

Someone I know in the NHS tried out the NHS one slot at the supermarket on Sunday. 1 mile queue for the car park.

Seems obvious in hindsight when you remember it's the largest employer in the UK.

  • The guidance is that you can leave home but should practice social distancing. Johnson has said that if people continue to fail to practice social distancing, the rules will have to change and that would mean a more complete lockdown

  • An excellent rabbit hole like project for total three month lock-down would be study of Japanese history from 1600-present.

  • Right.

So how come this thread now seems to be calling for Marshal law?

  • Even more horrifying (if that's even possible??) are the concentration camps in the north, I visited Unit 731 a few years ago and still think about it (and the subsequent cover up) a lot.

  • So how come this thread now seems to be calling for Marshal law?

    Because of panic.

  • It's the frustration around the fact that a lot in society are ignoring social distancing. When you are frustrated, you swing to the extreme. See, parents and tantrumming toddlers "RIGHT! All your toys, in the skip!!! I asked you nicely three time but you still keep hitting your sister, I've had ENOUGH!!!"

  • @hugo7 downgraded to code colour ‘Surly Steamroller Brown’ for chopsy bants

  • The guidance from the Government is really lacking.

They should have said - anyone working in a non "core business" should be either WFH or not going to work at all.

The guidance is to stay at home, to stay 2 meters away from everyone, but it still says "work from home where possible".

My mum is a conveyancing solicitor, and has gone to work to today. Who the fuck is moving house now?

She eventually agreed to go in, and bring IT kit back with her, but you could tell she didn't really get it, but the lack of clear guidance is appalling.

The builders everyone is talking about - clearly you can't build and extension from home - so in they go. Why is there not guidance that all non essential work needs to stop? It's baffling.

  • The message has been badly bungled.

Look at the podium from yesterday's update.

  • I saw a meme

    I’m surprised there’s isn’t a COVID-19 memes thread yet.
