  • As with most things, it’s not a panacea and takes more reading, experimentation and experience than I naively assumed.

Got a link to that tutorial? Also, you’re welcome to borrow the Dayton mic if you want.

  • Cool, thank you. I’ll give you a shout if the time comes.

This vid here: First half explains the mini DSP, the second half how to set it up with REW.

  • Which Bowie recording?

  • Nothing special. German pressing of Changes Two.

  • What drivers are they?

  • Tannoy IIILZ - 10” Monitor Golds in original factory cabinets.

Plan is to clean everything, replace the binding posts and worn out caps in the crossovers and see how I feel about them. Eventually build some new (much bigger) cabs and maybe bi-amp them.

  • Are they sealed cabinets?

Shame your north, would like to listen when they're sorted.
I've got poor man doresets but they're lovely. Though I'm no audiophile.

  • Yeah, sealed cabs. Going for bass-reflex eventually. You’re welcome to come have a listen.

Dorset T185? They look good. Certainly more suitable for London flats. Bit worried about having a couple of veneered fridges in the living room.

  • Yeah t185.

What power you have through them. Imagine they'll need a good bit if sealed.

  • Little 12w class D amp. Apparently they work quite well with old Tannoy DCs. They’re 92dB/w or something so go plenty loud.

It’s a DIY Paradise Charlize II, based on Tripath TA2020. Their site is down just now but that’s ok, it’s cringey. Great amp though. The circuit board is the size of a credit card!

  • Haha. I have 100w/channel.

But I dont ever turn them up much.

  • they are probably a bit less than 92dB - about 88.5 (i think)

  • Refurbished Chromecast audio for under £10000000 anyone? I bought one last week after dithering on the alternatives a while back - all good apart from the serial # apparently having been removed with a hedge trimmer.

  • That’s very interesting : )
I’ve had a pair of Tannoy Eshers from new and always wanted to modify them to make them bi-wireable/bi-ampable/(apply current loudspeaker fashion hack here). But life and decades of DIY got in the way.
    Is crossover ageing a thing?
Mine sound okay, but have suffered from 30 years of benign neglect (for example, the veneer is knackered from water staining) and I want to reclaim them. Just thinking if this is another factor to consider? TIA.

  • Is crossover ageing a thing?

Yes, but it the rate varies by orders of magnitude depending on the original components. You also have the opportunity to upgrade while you're in there, rather than just rebuild the crossovers with the same grade of components.

  • From what I’ve read capacitors do need replacing. Almost certainly for the bass, maybe the HF too if they measure too far off their factory value. The binding posts are rubbish too so that’s an easy fix.

  • Thanks y’all. Reclaim-and-upgrade presses all the buttons for me.

    @dbr / @mdcc_tester

  • Good shout. Might stock up on a couple if they’re still available after the apocalypse.

Alternative is to use a regular Chromecast (which is still available new)with a hdmi to rca cable I think.

  • I thought I read somewhere that wouldn't work as the HDMI converter wouldn't allow the device to detect the input for some reason? Never tried it personally so don't take my word for it

  • Just got a custom rack from hifiracks.co.uk - great service. Pleased with compact setup for the valve / horn setup

  • It's detailed reproduction of reverb that makes hi-fi worthwhile for me.

Getting it now. These guys do reverb

  • Boxes the size of washing machines just arrived on a pallet. Holy shit.
