There's no evidence to suggest the China model for containment is going to work in the medium-long term.

I’m low on tea bags, hope people aren’t hoarding Yorkshire tea.

Your presumption that every country should act on the same containment method is wrong.

Another point that seems to be controversial is that the U.K. has stated they are now only testing hospitalised cases.
That’s the opposite of what the WHO advised yesterday.
So from now on the daily number of new cases reported is going to look much lower right?
-

It's not just hospitality. Retail is also fucked.
Assume that these industries are the bell-weathers for a global recession. We're all in this shit together.

waitrose stratford westfield this morning was a serene place to be, piped elevator music providing the mogadon, placid polite shoppers inviting each other to choose their swans first before selecting their own
close the shutters with me on the inside till it's all over, now where is the lazyboy, tv and craft ale aisle
didn't even check out the toilet roll situation

I have a friend in Glasgow that is 99% sure she has it. Has broken her. Doctor says they won’t confirm as she hasn’t been abroad or in direct contact with a case (she has a one degree of separation)
The number published is low

As an aside, I just checked my pension and it is £12k lower in value than last month. Imagine how much of a ballbag it would be to be of pensionable age now and just about to draw it down.

I´d just like to add that it is usually the officials and politicans that make noises like "our pool of experts is the bestest" while the experts themselves just get on with the job and talk to other experts, wherever they may be. Finnish ones (officials, that is) are notorious for this. Here in Flanders I´ve read that the microbiology cluster here is the best in the world. Peter Piot, a Fleming, he of Ebola and HIV fame, was mentioned upthread, although I suppose nowadays he´d be counted as a member of that British pool as the good baron (yes that´s right bitches) works for the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Just buy something decent instead.

Is that the right way to use the term ball bag? Some one is a ball bag, doing something is a ball ache?
Edit oh, yeah, and covid-19 -

Really? I thought there was a consensus among experts that general testing in the delay phase was pointless.

Yes, for the purpose of this discussion Peter Piot is part of our pool of UK experts. My wife isn't British either and has no interest in defending British institutionalism and definitely not this goverment but she's seeing the work that's being done to fight this virus and I've mistakenly introduced her to a world of know-it-all-pricks.

Adding to the Nordic perspective; the simplified summary this morning is that Denmark and Norway closed their schools while Sweden and Finland didn't. All of these countries have reasonably competent civil servants, which I think goes to show that are good arguments for each approach.
The great thing is that this divide is a real time social experiment from which the entire world can learn. -

My flight from Chicago was very empty. Probably a quarter full at best
-

I think the UK experts agree with the WHOs message, the issue is our ability to implement such procedures. Our own shortcomings with respect to proper testing was likely factored into our current containment method.

Lol. I, for one, appreciated the post. So thanks!

Most pension funds start transferring your funds from stocks to cash in the 5-7 years before retirement, so most people should be okay.

Dunquerke spirit, right there. We're gonna be just fine!

You´re out of order. Who here said they knew better than the experts? I for one welcome her input as valuable and would be grateful for anything further she´d be willing to contribute with regard to said difference in approaches, estimated spread peaks and so on.
What I was driving at was that a number of experts (I´ve interviewed a number of them in this field) feel that there is no such thing as a UK /Finnish/Belgian pool. Just one big pool. I´d be surprised if Piot didn´t get a call from Brussels or take part in some teleconference called by the Belgians before they announced the lockdown.
