  • Steerer on mine is 176mm

  • Alas, that's probably too short, I guess it probably came from a 54?

Thanks for the help lads, I'll keep an eye out for a long enough fork and see if I can clean up the slightly mangled threads on the current fork.
Since this is CP, here's a mock-up of the bike:

  • New project stuff arrived.

  • Very nice, frame is lush, and my yearning for a Mercks Max fork is undiminished.

Hope you are slim or planning or not riding those wheels much, or the roads where you live are velodrome smooth. Those 12 spoke Shamals wheels are prone to multiple hairline cracks where the spokes join the rim. I've trashed through a pair of them myself on UK roads, which as they're eye wateringly expensive these days, was extra painful. The 16 spoke ones seem much sturdier, but clincher ones are harder to find than tubulars, and they're still ruddy expensive.

Looking forward to seeing it built up, with shiny silver I hope.

    Campag or Shimano?

  • Thanks!

Those wheels are for display use only. ;-) For our roads I have a pair of low clinchers and tubulars.

I'm still in doubt considering groupsets: 9 speed Record Titanium or 8 speed C Record. I have both on the shelf and that makes it even harder to choose.

  • Even nicer!

Can't go wrong with either of them, nice dilemma to have :)

  • Almost done. Went for something less consistent but more appropriate for riding: a 10 speed Record/Chorus groupset, ITM Eclypse stem, carbon Flite. Found some original Merckx bartape from the nineties in the shed too. Wheels look great on it though.

  • Cheers fella, yeah I did see that but alas steerer is not long enough. I've got a 61cm Merckx EX Ti I wanted the fork for, but it has a 20cm headtube, so I need at least 230mm with a low stack headset like a Tange but nearer 240mm with the Record one I currently have.

I even emailed Merckx (the company not the man himself) to see if they had any old stock knocking about, or if they could source any from any of their old stockists, but they replied back saying no, so the search continues.....thanks again. As you're closer to Merckx HQ than me seemingly surrounded by lovely Merckx frames, if you ever come across any with a long enough steerer please let me know, any colour as I'll likely get it repainted. And I'll try and reward you with some suitable Belgium beer or other approved goodies.

  • Do I have any options here? The hinge that screws in to the hanger hits the chain so it can’t go in to the smallest cog. I’ve already got a spacer in there - any more and the little post that hits the tab on the hanger won’t engage.
(This is a 10spd mtb mech on a 90s steel road frame by the way)

  • So is the derailleur mounting bolt too long?
If so, cut it a bit shorter.
Before getting the hacksaw/dremel out you'll need to protect the thread. You can do this with an axle locking nut - restores the thread when you remove it.

  • The bolt (on the hinge, that’s not the mount to the frame) is hitting the chain in the photo, but actually if that wasn’t in the way, the bit the bolt goes through hits it anyway, and I can’t trim that. Perhaps I can get a mounting arm that’s longer?

  • where have you got a spacer? between the mech and the hanger? can't see from the photo.
could you put a washer between the cassette and the dropout?

  • where have you got a spacer? between the mech and the hanger?

Yeah, but it's not much - about .5mm, if that. A washer on that side of the hub is a good call and pretty sure I've got some suitable washers in the random bits box.

UPDATE: worked a treat, nice one!

  • Mech hanger is perfectly straight?

  • Mech hanger is not perfectly straight, no. I Can’t believe you’ve not been reading the CP for this bike!

  • Haha oh damn. I have, I promise. Just hadn’t checked in during the last 3 days

  • Those last 3 days have been a rollercoaster, man.

  • Light now modded

  • Very cool! However, I think the moustache bar shape is much more suited to be flipped upside down.
