  • Ignoring VAR I've always thought that offside needs to be relaxed. Even so far as to require daylight.

I liked Souness' suggestion yesterday. If any part of the player is onside, it's not offside.

  • Unlike you to C&P an article Corndog...

Like I said I’d rather we had better than G&S but out interest of the 20 teams in the Premiership how many are run properly do you reckon?
Like Markyboy says, you might be happy with how the odious weasel of a cunt that runs your shop is but still got you fuck all.
As for managerial revolving doors many a club are trigger happy in striving for survival/success.

  • That's a bit like shearer's definition

  • Tbh: I didn't read cornies post in a snidey way. Probably abit soon to be asking about West ham after they've reappointed Moyes though. No one needs that.

  • Apologies in advance... East London remains a bit of a problem, obvs...

  • Then you’d just have the same problem in reverse, no? Arguing whether said armpit was onside or not.

  • Sure, was just commenting that I think that offside is too stringent and ruining the flow of the game. Wasn’t suggesting that it would solve the VAR problem.

  • I liked Souness' suggestion yesterday. If any part of the player is onside, it's not offside.

But where do you get the offside 'line' from? (didn't see the Souness piece)

  • So any overlap is onside? A toe or even a heel?

  • That's the suggestion.

I just feel that the rule is too tight. I think football would be better to watch and play if there was more leeway for the attacking players.

Was talking to my old Dad about the days before offside over Christmas. By which I mean what his Dad said about it. Clearly it's a necessary rule, just seems Draconian for the sake of it.

  • Any of you older folks remember what it was like before the 1990 offside rule change?

  • Any of you older folks remember what it was like before the 1990 offside rule change?

Yes. Arsenal and the offside trap.

  • Realistically though it isn't accurate enough to make those super tight calls.

Given the frame rate of the cameras and the speed of the players there can be a 10cm+ difference depending which frame you choose for a player kicking the ball.

  • Was it so long ago? I feel old. Obviously you used to get far more offsides that didn't really impact on play. Wingers on the opposite side being offside because they didn't see the line stepping up and that kind of thing. Attackers didn't play on the shoulder as much because of the risk of being offside.

  • Fair point- of course it could work the other way showing people on side which in reality may not be, that would never carry the same amount of uproar; in that case the rule needs to be amended to suit the technology I'd say.

  • Lamperty, what a debut...

Out of contract at the end of the season according to the graun.

On a different note, if we’re playing 3 at the back could a Azpilicueta-Rudiger-Tomori trio work with James and Alonso in front of them?

I’m not sold on Zouma in our back line- he has his moments but not sure he’s what we need next to Tomori

  • For me it should be: both feet onside = player onside.

It’s shit that the champions and the champions elect were handed a massive boost from VAR.

  • That's less likely though as strikers don't tend to be running away from goal when they score.

I'm not particularly keen on amending the rule which applies to thousands of clubs just to suit the 20 with the most money. It will probably happen though.

  • Alonso

Off to Inter for £25 million apparently

  • Shame.

Not sure how that’s going to help our quest for CL football next season.

  • I was at school playing field hockey when the offside rule got completely revoked. Hockey suddenly became so much more fun.

  • That is a shame, but he's gone a bit off the boil for me...

  • Reports are now that Abramovich has not yet reapplied for a visa let alone received one.

  • Appeared to be a lacklustre showing from Tottenham this afternoon, against a tenacious Southampton side.

I can't see us catching Chelsea, so if we've anything to play for in this season, it's 5th place and at least above Arsenal, again.

Hopefully this will persuade Levy to open the coffers for an overhaul of the squad.

And please, get rid of Aurier ffs.

  • 4 goals (one of which was an absolute peach from Haller) and a clean sheet for Moyes first game.
Could only listen on the radio so didn’t see it but sounds like there was more urgency about the team and that Anderson showed some of which hasn’t been seen since last season.

However one swallow doesn’t make summer and things are mighty tight at the bottom.
