Well I've been truly swindled

With you. 5 year warranty, colours and serviceable.
-
• #2379
You’re much less likely to need the warranty with the SON though.
-
• #2380
Exactly that. They're shit.
Had 3 of this model, from 15lux up to the brightest one. Every single one did the fall off and rattle around thing.Edit: talking about b&m lyt.

Dynamo question. Took my wheel off to pop bike in car. Got home, plugged the block back onto the wheel as usual, and now it seems to have stopped working.
I've taken the block off, made sure wires are all ok, everything looks fine? Might try clipping the ends off as i have plenty of wire. I've also wiped the hub attachment to make sure its clean etc etc
Anyone come across this before?
It's an SP Dynamo with an IQ-X light. I'm hoping its not the light broken... As far as i can tell the wheels spinning freely, so doesn't feel like powers being drawn.
-
• #2382
And to mirror all the comments above (when working) the IQ-X is an incredible light.

The real talk is that you don't need a dynamo for London - those £10 USB Ali express lights (which are leyzene copies I think) are 100% fine for London. But a dynamo is nice to have in London.
Unless you're desperate / need to have thru axle it's simply wasting money getting anything other than the nice shimano hubs which are well cheap even from new. All the reduced drag chat from other brands is just marketing bullshit. And if yod spend ~£35 on any front dynamo light it will be fine for London. I have the IQ X and it's like a motorcycle light basically. Hugely unnecessary for town - but appreciated in dark country lanes. You don't need a stand light
And great rear lights are cheap as hell. £15max. +£80 rear lights for clean lines is a fashion statement only.

Highly inaccurate.
Spin and Shimano next to a SON and you can see there is a huge difference; we have a demo stand to show this. Shimanos work well, but they are slower and heavier!
-
• #2385
Your marketing stand shows the more expensive models as being faster? ;)
60kg rider / 30kg bike and gear / 100 watts. Non-Dynamo Hub = 23.83km/h.
Most efficient hub: on – 23.29km/h (5.25w extra drag) +2.3%
Least efficient hub: on – 23.19km/h (6.25w extra drag) +2.7%"The most efficient dynamo hubs when switched ON add between 3min 24sec and 5min 47sec to a flat ride over 100km when compared to a regular hub."
https://www.cyclingabout.com/dynamo-hub-drag-lab-testing/So even if you double the least efficient dynamo your adding only a few extra minutes over every 100km. That's beyond negligable for commuting and only slightly affecting times at a 200km audax - which I'm sure could be gained back elsewhere in bike position or tyre tread.
Round of applause for the ultra endurance cyclists who need to maintain the minutes over slow cycling for weeks on end against the clock. The 99% of other cyclists will never need or nor notice any demonstrable difference.

Agreed. It’s marginal, but it’s fact.
2.5 minutes over 100km, does that think about the different on the rear hub from a low end to high end? (Could that be closer to 5 minutes?)
-
• #2388
I dunno, RTFA :)
All I know is that if those maths are correct people are overpaying for their dynamos.
"Given the leverage of a wheel and the flywheel effect of the rotating mass, dynamo hub drag only has a small effect on your speed. The result for most people is likely to be an extra three to six minutes riding time over 100km, all while getting a good charge to your electronics (or while running lights)."
-
• #2389
I’m not sure people are over paying as such. The weight to an SP is a chunk - if your looking to build a lightweight bike then that certainly comes into it.
You also have the aesthetic side of things, then the support if you have any issues etc.
I have an old Shimano and it’s great, also have 2 Jtek hubs and an SON and each can’t really be faulted

• #2390
I appreciate you work in the industry and it's important people buy stuff to keep shops and stuff open. But as this is the internet we don't have to pretend that Son hubs offer value for money. People can like them and think they look cool, but it's silly to say they perform on some whole other level
-
• #2391
Arguing on the internet is never as fun as I think it's going to be :( Anyway sounds like you've got some nice dynamo set ups!
-
• #2392
Not arguing!
I have seen enough knackered hubs from Shimano / sp to know that Son lasts longer, and can then be repaired, and that for the money the Shimano hubs are well worth it.
Most people don’t ride round the world... some do though. It’s personal, I tend to favour the Jtek hubs as much as SON are bloody lovely.
- not into selling the most expensive, I’m about selling the most suitable, the best option for the needs and / or what the customer wants!

I've been paying silly money for hubs that don't even help me to see where I'm going!
-
• #2394
Shimano hubs (historically) have a habit of dropping a magnet from the shell and shrieking
-
• #2395
Could it be that the light is switched off? From memory I can only turn my IQ-X on/off when it has power so can be a bit fiddly turning it on when stationary. Maybe unplugging it reset it, idk?
-
• #2396
Hmm maybe, so maybe i'll go around the block, then try turning it on again, see if anything happens. I tried pressing the button on/off when the wheel was spinning in the frame upside down.

• #2397
Got a son rear light, rack version. Also got a caradice bagman.
I want the light on the bagman. How do I make this happen.
-
• #2398
Buy a rack.
-
• #2399
Or sell the rack light and get a mudguard light. Or seatpost light.
-
• #2400
Don't want a rack.
No guards.
Seatpost won't be seen. Because I'm not as tall as you.
xx
I got mine from Rose in February for £68. I don't think this is a special price for them.
