Doesn't the G Wagen have stuff like portal axles and locking difs that mean it's loads better off road than a Defender?
-
• #50228
Enough clearance to go over a bit of sand tho'... My mate canes his old Defender down the beach on the islands we have nearby, it's a fucking sight to behold... Kangaroos in his wake, beautiful...
Can't really do that in a Mazda3, I'm keen to give it a go...

what's the worst that could happen!
is it legal to smash a car up and down the seaside?
you were missed last night, joe. :(

Yes, yes it is... He sets up his fishing camp on the beach, I would very much like to do this... We were up at Bribie Island today, so beautiful up there... Needs another 4X4 choking up the environment, obvs...
Yeah, I wish I'd been there too... Next time...

The more cars I have the fewer there are for other people to drive. I see it as my contribution to Climate Change.

It is awesome up there. I used to live on the sunshine coast and it was a common weekend getaway. Amazing that it doesn't go wrong more often with the amount of people that get out there

Anyway, what you need is a V12 40 series landy

I have only suggestedLou gets a Jimny as it will never get used properly off road or do any towing, and there’s many in NZ because Japan

We've had our car for almost a year and it's the first time we've been over there... Criminal really...
My mate had had to pull so many bogged idiots out, he's shown me some cracking videos... Always funny when some big mouth cashed up bogan's brand new 4X4 gets taken by the tide...
I shouldn't laugh, but... It's pretty fucking funny...
Here's Matt's Landy at North Straddy...

You'll find in NZ that defenders aren't common or liked as much, but the Toyota Hilux is king.
As much as we love them in UK, Landies do break down a lot compared to a Toyota (newer Hiluxes have some issues though I hear).
Also, Jimneys can embarrass defenders. The 4x4 clubs love them. They're just too small...

Yeah I noticed that there not common, I only found one for sale in all of Otago.
I’d quite like an FJ40 personally

They're pretty cool but agricultural as hell. Always wanted one though...
Our 'farm' back home in NZ just has a path through a field for a driveway, so I'd like to get the folks a small 4x4. They have a 4x4 wagon currently but it has f all ground clearance. They'd need something bigger than a Jimney, maybe a Vitara would be OK. I don't have much experience with car-like 4x4s except rental cars, and the newish Rav4s are shiiiit.

I habe a Golf 1.4 tsi with a DSG gearbox, which I really like, but i need something with moar bootspace.
Is it worth just getting the estate version, or is the Skoda Superbe any good?

I had a Leon Estate hire car the other week, i liked it.
The Leon / Golf and Octavia are basically the same car although i think the Octavia estate has marginally more load space.
We used to have a superb, it was in another league compared to the mid size estates though, much bigger and limo-esque rear leg room.

Superbe gets my vote.

I like the superb estate a lot. And the boot is massive.

What was the Superbe like to drive? I’ve and A6 and pondering a change.

I really liked it, It was a mk2 saloon with the bi fold rear hatch/boot lid, 170bhp TDi i think

I wanted a Superb estate, looked at the mk3 2015 onwards in SEL trim. They seemed to hold their price quite well and were £1500-2000 more than an equivalent Passat. Ended up with a Passat GT 2.0tdi 190ps DSG. Also comes on 18 inch alloys vs 19s on the R-Line. Not exciting in any way but does everything very well so far and adaptive cruise makes boring A road drives so much easier....

There is something very attractive in an understated way about the Passat. I think they look fantastic totally stock, but slammed on BBS LM’s or similar.

Well, according to many off roader reviews...
An ex's dad bought one new back in the day (around 2010ish I think). They lived on a farm and had previously had all the obvious cars. She apparently took the piss to start, but when I came down to it, it was incredibly capable and as they didn't have kids at home the boot vs seats was never an issue. Pretty sure it could pull something small around as well. Plus fuel economy was much better for day-to-day living.
It's probably the sort of car you'd actually buy if you genuinely needed a 4x4 but not all the extra room.
