That's one of the things i love about my current car - ACC with DSG.

To be honest, it's likely that, for a particular engines size, I'll likely get whichever of the Passat, Leon, Octavia / Superbe comes innat the right price point with all of the optional bits that I like.

Thanks for all the input, folks!

  • Posted this a while back - a Passat on 20" hre rims. I think it looks great.

  • "Cork & Canvas: Australia's first paint and sip studio" Amazing...

Great car... I miss Sydney, need to get down there again soon...

  • Yeah, I've actually been there for a studio night out. At least it was change from the crows nest hotel.

  • G350d Professional though (China Blue obvs)

Great interior too with the tartan seats.

  • The jacked up Jimney a few pages back won't end well. Seems the Americans have forgotten the issues they induced onto the LJ and SJ series.

My first car was an LJ80 hardtop, 993cc about 35mpg, big fuck off tyres and a nightmare to insure...

Because the yanks couldn't grasp the short wheelbase, narrow track and high center of gravity does not go round corners well at speed.
Many accidents and death and sue Suzuki and ramp up insurance costs for sensible people in other countries followed.
When trying to get cover on mine the broker was getting limited as no one would touch them as they where the ones that just roll over.

Had mine up on two wheels many times. Did lots of offroading with landies and Range rovers where the compact size of the LJ had many advantages and could drive round stuck larger vehicles. Was cramped in the back, managed to get 6 adults in total in mine (4 in back) with shotguns and no one shot a hole in the roof and it didn't fall over.
After seeing that jacked up blackbison thing i suspect history will repeat itself. Very capable little vehicles if driven within there limits and you understand COG and rollover limits. The LJ's never had the inclinometers fitted i assume they got fitted to later models as a get out clause for user error.

  • I don't think they're gonna forget the Vitara episode in a hurry, they got sued to fuck...

  • America huh? Didn't Audi get sued for unintended acceleration when it was actually just dopey drivers hitting the wrong pedal? Can't remember the exact details but essentially driver error.

  • In Spain and I finally get what you Yetiheads are on about. Rented a Citroen Berlingo (mainly for the sliding doors) and although it drives like a van (because it is a van) there’s a lot to be said for a purely practical wagon. It swallows so much stuff and I never knew how much I needed sliding doors. There’s got to be a small market for these things with big engines and decent suspension.

  • Bargain 996

    Auto :/

  • True. Very clean though and from a reputable dealer.

  • I have had a few SJ, as I did like them as they were cheap fun off roading. They rolled, as a girlfriend who was driving found out, as she went too fast in to a bend. Off road tyres at a low pressure...

The SJ were cheap and the off roaders would stick vauxhall astra diesel engine in them and a friend had a 1.7turbo xud mated to the vitara gearbox. The lift kits made the track wider so that helped with the stability.

The mk1 panda was the best 4x4 imo.

When doing off road days in the past, off road tyres make a hell of a difference. But on the road they really do increase road noise to headache proportions.

  • Toyota and Malcomb Gladwell.

No idea if any of it's true.

  • Didn't a ford have that problem?

    EDIT Yep - u.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/29/ford-classaction-lawsuit/2036677/

  • my berlingo is practical but while it can take physically big loads like loads of bikes, when it comes to heavy loads its definitely not like a van, the suspension is a like any small hatchback.

I had to change the heater matrix on mine last weekend too and it meant removing the entire dashboard which was a pain in the arse and took HOURS.

  • Sooner have the 987. No leather dash or any other obviously visible toys, but still a manual with a good colour and wheels.

The more I see them the more I think how well the 987 boxster/cayman are aging. Especially vs something like the 991 targa which already looks hideous.

  • That episode of revisionist history is savage

  • America huh? Didn't Audi get sued for unintended acceleration when it was actually just dopey drivers hitting the wrong pedal? Can't remember the exact details but essentially driver error.

Audi 5000. I had a professor who was on the NHTSA panel for that.

  • Final (?) Murray Escort episode on Retropowers channel

  • Slightly disappointed by the blandness (maybe understatedness) of that in the end. Seems to cry out for different wheels at least.

  • I love it, the fact that at first glance it’s so normal is what draws you into the details.

It’s on parr with Singer in terms of quality, but they’ve resisted wide-arches and stayed true to the narrow body life.

  • I saw an early Boxster, silver, sun-ravaged paint, dents, roll loops, manual, loud pipes on black steels in Venice the other day. I’d give it a poke with someone else’s. It was cool.

  • I hope it's not and we have another one with the reveal/full details/testing and actual review by Murray!
