  • 100x12mm for disc is pretty daft when you pick it all apart

  • But not so daft it shouldn’t exist.

  • If you're being lazy, no, I guess not. Use existing front hub spacing, squeeze a disc interface and introduce a load of dish into a setup that was originally engineered for zero dish (100mm rim brake). Thankfully offset rims go some way to helping

  • he is the ultimate tinfoil hat wanker

  • Like this?

  • My new budget gravel/cx build. It's an Octane One Gridd frameset (the cheap one from CRC/Wiggle) that I picked up on ebay. Thought I would share as it's one of a few cheaper frameset options. Stack and reach are a bit lower and shorter than an Arkose so a long stem gets you a fairly roady position. The welds are pretty agricultural but it has thru axles, mudguard and rack mounts, and takes 3 bottle cages. First riding impressions are good - I think this will be a fun bike. Need to acetone some logos and chop the steerer, of course. Build is mainly parts bin stuff with some Light Bicycle wheels off here.

  • strong .. like @Dick on a budget

  • Anyone ridden 'Badger Divide' route Inverness to Glasgow. Assessing bike options/suitability of current gravel bike hence post in gravel thread.

Should I repost to routes etc?

  • ScotDuro is based on that route.
    https://www.theracingcollective.com/scotduro.html

This route is rough so at least 40mm tyres are recommended

  • Aha, yeah that's the event I'm planning for. Was looking for another experience, most of the photos suggest people primarily riding it as a MTB route. But realise the big grey area here.

  • I'm planning to ride that as well. Will probably roll on a rigid 29er.

  • Nice! Yeah basically this is me trying to talk myself out of building a rigid 29er...which I should probably do...

  • Did the northern section from Inverness to Lochearnhead. I rode my Escapade with 42c Resolutes, my mate was on a Camino with 40c Nanos, both fine.

  • Helpful, thanks. Current setup is 43mm rock and roads (after Resolutes and Nanos funnily enough). Main concern is mud clearances if it gets wet and comfort on long descents.

Current set-up has seen off TNR and Gritfest, but both left me wondering if the switch to bigger clearances was a good option.

  • This might be from someone on here, but I can't remember who!

  • I don't have the skills to ride 200miles off road on a drop bar bike. My thinking is that flat bar, big tyred bike will be more forgiving on the descends when I'm spent and sleepy.

  • Struck me as a pretty weather-proof route, I doubt mud would be too much of a problem. I did a bit of a write-up and some pics here:

  • I went over the corryarick pass a week or so back, which is part of the badger route. Doable on a gravel bike, much nicer on hardtail mountain bike. Flew down the descent at warp speed, which was ace!

Full write up of our adventure coming soon I hope.

  • That me.

I have ridden a bunch of it a few times now and both gravel or mountain bikes work. Basically if your comfortable off-road 40c is fine. If you arent then the security of a mountain bike is probably worth the slower pace.

Recently rode a shorter version in reverse. Slightly less milage but still has all the good bits. Rode it on my karate monkey and it was great.

And here is the setups @Eamesy and I rode.

  • Disc brakes on 100mm QR was just fine for ages. It's a less bad solution than the poorly-designed 4-spline interface all the hipsters want between their cranks.

  • Sounds interesting, pic not showing for me unfortunately.

  • I did it on a Brother Kepler Disc last year with 42s. There are fewer sections that would have benefited a MTB compared to those that didn't in my opinion.
Coming down the back of the Corryarick pass was pretty mental though. The only time I wish I'd had some suspension.

  • What's the current hive mind opinion on fatter tyre disc brake road bikes. Selling my 'proper' road bike and my rando-wankeur-650b-rimbrake bike and would like to find a new one to replace both.
