  • oh yeah, totally. Its a good product.

Their PR fluff for Force AXS reads 'cheaper Red' though. Shimano has normalised 2nd tier cheap-ness which is 50% cheaper.

  • On Friday I'll find out if 12 speed XTR works on a 12 speed SRAM cassette. With a KMC chain.

  • alhamdulillah!

  • Cable tho, been years since I've fitted a cable groupset.

  • weird, i actually really like it. Much more than the Red AXS chainset. The cranks are nice but the chainrings are bogging.

  • The crankarms in itself are inoffensive like any other carbon crank but the chainrings have that stupid ugly shape with a lot uneccesary angles like something out of a transformers movie or a new nissan. The Red ones are at least a single piece CNC thing

  • Definitely seems like unnecessary integration.
No doubt the other chainset manufacturers like Rotor and Praxis will have 12 speed compatible chainsets out soon, with the added benefit that they need to accommodate smaller chainrings @hippy

  • Old Red Etap or new Force Etap, which do people think is the better buy?

  • Old Etap I reckon, especially if you have lots of 11 speed stuff left.

  • Old Etap for sure. Hunt around in the german/euro online retailers and you'll get a good price. I did.
If you dont mind having atleast an extra grand left in your pocket compared to new axs stuff and dont care about not having the most up to date bling then its an easy choice.
Finally got round to building my etap hrd caad 10 last night. Pretty special.
FD is seems to be a bit of a faff with hollowgram Si chainset.

  • @Acliff You dont happen to run a hollowgram chainset with Etap?

  • Thanks.
Either would be an entire swap from Ultegra Hydro.
New force stuff currently seems same price as old red...?

  • oh sorry I'm not up to date on the new force pricing had assumed it would have been same ballpark as new red.
But now see its £1650 on wiggle right now without cranks and cassette etc. Might be cheaper than that on the usual german retailers.

I paid £1075 for Red Etap hydro disc groupset from bike24 about 6 weeks ago.
I Reckon if you've still got 11 speed bits to use then stick with it. You'll obvs need 12 speed cassette and crankset/chainrings on top of the £1650 for etap force so it soon mounts up.

I'd guess old red etap weighs less than new force etap. But I do like the stealthy look of the new force group.

  • No I haven’t had planned to, but gone 1x spidering on one bike with mechanical red, and got Sram red chainset with Etap.

  • ok cheers, there seems to be varied success with hollowgram and etap. I'll need to space drive side crank out by another 2mm to clear it.
Just want to find someone else with the same issue

  • I currently have a gxp red crank in a Specialized BB30 frame with adapter cups.
The arms are worryingly close to the derailleur limit screws and I have couple of scratches in the inside of the crank arm where it’s made contact.

  • Aye, as the bike is just now the arms would certainly make contact when sprinting.
I feel I've invested too much time and money in Hollowgram to ditch them now.
Should never have sold my DA9000 cranks :(

  • DA9000 with Etap just wouldn’t be right...

    Is the shifting not ideal?
Supposedly they shortened the limit screw in later releases for more clearance.
May try and source one if they are replaceable to preserve my crank.

  • Yeah I don't thing I could have ever mixed DA with etap. Just wrong.

Woooft. Insane price. I think mine might have shortened limit screws as they really dont protrude much but the clearance is so tight it would easily hit the body of the mech under power.

Shifting is ok. I'm sure I could live with it. But it's not perfect.

Couldn't be arsed to take the crank arms off again tonight to add in another 2.5mm spacer. Will do it tomorrow then ride it and see.
If its still not right then I'll probably get red 22 cranks but I've never been keen on their looks.
Hollowgram and spidering looks a million times better.
I'm hopeful though that spacing the drive side arm out a bit more should sort the clearance and shifting.

  • Bought this caad10 frame from @suffolk_boii nearly 6 months ago. Never had a build suffer as many set backs as this one.
I just want to ride my bike. It's killing me.

  • I’m so sorry - but worth it in the end...?
