  • "Intel Expecting Apple to Transition to Custom ARM-Based Chips Starting in 2020"

The article talks about the reason being that the same apps should be able to run on iOS and MacOS but that could be solved, and has been solved, with software before. The main reason is Apple being fed up with Intels poor planning and slow release cycles, and the fact that Apple silicone is likely to outperform Intels by a margin.

Smells like an ARM based Mac Pro in 2020?

  • They are contemplating previewing at the next WWDC in June/July.

  • My Macbook Pro Logic board failed today. I went to buy another but was informed that the new models are not upgradable.

Does anyone happen to know the last model Macbbok Pro that was user upgradable? i DON

  • Upgradable how? Ram? That was ages ago I think

  • Yeah it was a very long time ago, unfortunately - to the extent that the types of upgrades you'd be making would be slower than what you could buy at point of sale for a modern one. It's frustrating but if you want to stick with apple, upgrading a laptop at home is a thing of the past.

Think 2012 was the last version.

  • i need to replace the battery on my MacBook air.
i can't be without my MacBook as need it for work constantly.
where can i get it replaced while i wait at relatively short notice?

  • Do it yourself? It’s relatively easy and tools don’t cost much.

  • logic-board repairs: i have a macbook pro 15 retina 2012 that has suddenly stopped booting properly i suggest it's either graphics or RAM. tried all the resetting steps with no solution. I don't think apple would repair, will just offer replacement or a mad quote. anybody knows of anyone that can do that sort of repair and not break the bank?
i also have 2 macbook air a1466 boards that have been water damaged and show no life so i'd like to get these repaired too.
    any recommendations would be appreciated
    thank you

  • I wondered if someone could help. I have an old macbook running OS 10.6.8 and I would ike to upgrade it. These machines don't have recovery mode. I can't go to the App store on the machine because App Store needs a more recent version of Chrome than my OS can support. So I'm in a bit of a bind. Any ideas?

  • Do you have to access the update via App store / Chrome?
Can't you upgrade directly from your mac?

Other than that only creating a bootable USB with 10.7 comes to mind -
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/08/make-a-bootable-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-installer-from-a-usb-flash-drive/

  • Your machine may not be upgradeable, past 10.6.8
    Have you checked it’s doable?

  • Here's the thing, I'm running the lastest version of chrome that I can with 10.6.8, and I cant connect the relevant page on the app store, the connection just times out.

will investigate the bootable mac thing, thanks

  • As extra has said easy to do just need the penta screw driver.

    Has your battery expanded?

  • Cheaper to get a secondhand board. Maybe ask on reddit? There was a place in loughton that were helpful to me so maybe worth a look in.

The macbook air boards may revive if left in an 99% ipa but depends if on board parts have short circuited.

  • What spec macbook?

Are you keeping to 10.6.8 for a reason?

  • these two boards cost me pretty much nothing. Found few people on eBay that would do the repairs for £99 each.. no fix no fee. Their feedback seems pretty good. They’re early 2015 so to buy a second hand they would cost ~150-170+ Could repair them and sell on (?)

  • It's the white 2011 Macbook:
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo,
    4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.
I have purchased a Lion OS 10.7 CD online which I am hoping to install manually. Think that'll work?

This has been my workshop machine for three years, and hence has not been connected to the internet, and never got updates. It has also spent the last year with an exploded battery and no trackpad. Just got it fixed up because I don't like waste and it was £200 to fix against £400 for a 'new' second hand machine. It's also a secondary back-up for my large image archive.

  • Stupid idea to buy an iMac now? Or stupid to wait when I need a computer on the offchance a newer model is released soon?

  • yes

  • I think I have one of these, and 10.6 is as far as it would go.

  • OK new MacBook Pro day has happened.

Looks like I'll need a new monitor to do it justice.

Not too spendy recommendations for something 22"ish please?

  • Eizo or NEC if you need accurate colour.
If not then Dell UltraSharp/UltraFine are nice.
Don't think of buying anything that's not an IPS panel.

  • I suspect getting it to my place in paddington would be too difficult / expensive. I just want to chuck the credit card at this problem*.

    * which seems to be that I made a custom display Plist for my weird non-mac compatible HP monitor to make it work back in 2013...and now for the life of me I can't remember what I did that made it work...

  • I’ll hand deliver it to you...
I’m actually slightly torn on whether to sell it, it doesn’t play well with eGPUs but it’s by far the best screen I’ve used. Makes my work Dell 4K look like crap.
