Tbf without seeing a rough methodology it's hard to know how accurate it is.
For eg does it factor the recycling of the old cars?
Anyway realistically in a country with one of the highest rates of new car consumption (every 2.5yrs iirc) is comparing keeping old cars with buying a new electric / hybrid a remotely fair comparison?
Where do you think most of the world's electricity comes from?
But as we move towards more renewables it will hopefully be less of an issue. I just found out that NYC and NJ have both upped their offshore wind targets, which is really positive.

One of my cars is 21, the other is 12. I've clearly got some catching up to do.

Would any of the major car manufacturers even consider moving away from diesel and petrol if it weren't for Tesla?
Yes. Things like Prius and Leaf have had a way bigger real world effect.
Loads of people have been in a Prius. Most people haven't even heard of a Tesla. They're like a California Morgan to the man in the street.

Teslas are for cosmopolitan capitalists, the bohemian bourgeoisie, and centrist dads.

This thread is extremely self referential at the moment.
If we keep up like this it might become sentient.

On a serious note though, these vehicles obviously put out a lot of electrical power, and as my role involves rescuing people from road traffic collisions, as well as powerboat for rescue response and water rescue technician, no company can tell me what might happen to their vehicles if they end up in a body of water (a ford, for example). I know how to isolate Tesla's, and can access crash data for any other hybrids through a data terminal on the appliances, but people are very wary of telling us what might happen.

Meanwhile, larger car manufacturers are developing cheap and efficient electric cars for 20% of the price, without the childish gimmicks.
