I consider this sort of thing politically scandalous, but nothing seems to scandalise people in politics any more, unless they want to damage Jeremy Corbyn.

Javid is pushing voter's buttons by saying what they want to hear unfortunately.

The reality is most of the country aren't the slightest bit scandalised by his comments because they agree with him.

Absolutely not 'most of the country'.

It's the usual race to the bottom that rightwingers try for votes. Thankfully, it often misfires, as in the recent case of Horst Seehofer in Germany, whose behaviour has been disgraceful and cost his party dearly at the polls (in Bavaria).

I'm less convinced that it's not "most of the country".

A large number aren't that upset by it but are guided by the headlines of a migrant crisis and the rest and feel "something needs to be done".

Let's be honest, if we were all tolerant of immigrants we wouldn't be wondering what's next in the Brexit process.
