  • reckon the threads will still be the same and I can just unscrewthe hose from the slx caliper and whack it in a Deore

    Yes

  • try this one out (and report back if it is fun.... :)):
    https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-br-mt520-post-mount-d01s-brake-caliper-721662

    it uses the same fitting

  • Those SLX brakes I bought for my Hummus have a leaky caliper up front.

...And for some reason, you stood your ground refusing to send it off for warranty!

  • Yes, deore 4 pots. Still waiting for my set...

There are XT 4 pots too if you wanna go upmarket!

  • The one I could have possibly warrantied was a Deore. These SLX I bought off retrobike.

I fully intended to try and warranty the Deore but then it slipped my mind for a little while and by the time I remembered about it it was waay out of warranty so I just punted it on eBay (with full disclosure).

But that episode just goes to prove that even buying new doesn’t make you immune to the curse of the leaky caliper.

  • I've got old tiagra (4600) set up on my CdF with BB7 brakes. Stopping power is okay/could be better -- nowhere near as awesome as my Tiagra/Juintech or Rival/Spyres.

Now I'm wondering if it would help if I moved up to 10sp 105 (5700) levers? Will those levers still work with 4600 derailleurs? Looking for a cheap solution and my levers are ratty anyhow ...

  • Won't make big difference, cable and housing will (the Yokozuna Reaction will improve it considerably, as well as setting up the BB7 as best you can, i.e. make sure arm is fully open but the dial on both sides to adjust pads).

  • Anyone got spare post mount bolts?

  • Stupid question alert.

My rs505 pads need replacing. What should I be looking at? Standard Shimano or is it worth looking elsewhere?

  • uberbike

  • Shimano.

  • Bought this: https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-st-rs685-hydraulic-disc-brake-stis-br-rs785-disc-brakes-post-mount-75654.html

afaik it comes pre-bled. Am I understanding http://si.shimano.com/pdfs/dm/DM-BR0008-08-ENG.pdf correctly? Just remove the yellow plug, insert the hose and tighten?

Pictures of everything in the box will be uploaded tonight.

Or should I just take it to a bike shop? If it isn't obvious, I'm a disc brake virgin.

  • should I just take it to a bike shop?

    yes

They are probably OEM units and if so there's a good possibility that they won't be bled properly compared to the consumer units.

  • If pads need replacing, check the rotor too, they may be showing wear, if used with a new pads, could accelerate the pads wear.

Recommend going for metal pads and new rotor combination, as swedeee said, get some new cheap pads from uberbike.

FWIW, I brought some super cheap metal pads on Amazon, and they work perfectly well (with Avid G2 rotor with RS505).

  • Nice one Ed, will do

  • For the Uberbike pads does a "pair" mean two calipers or one caliper? i.e. two little pads or four?

  • Two pads. You’ll need two pairs if you’re replacing both front and rear pads.

  • Thanks! I should have known it would be the more expensive one :'(

  • Back again, are the finned inserts worth the extra? Looks like @hippy had some a couple of years ago but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on whether they help at all (in this thread according to my searching)

I recently had to stop a ride because my rotors/pads/whatever were sizzling so I'm thinking maybe a good idea. That was with SRAM DB5.

  • I've used ICE Tech rotors and normal cheaper rotors and have no idea if there's a difference in performance (I don't care if they measure lower temps if I never notice this as a benefit) so the last one I bought was the cheaper type.

  • sizzling

    Don't brake so much.

  • Hmm okay. Anyone else? @swedeee still rate them?

  • really don't know if there is a difference. I use the uberbike finned ones with replaceable fins on my road bike, and plain old non-finned on my mtb. my logic is that I brake for longer periods on my road bike rather than my mtb. so need the fins

  • I would want it the other way, my MTB is hydro whereas road bike is cable disc. I don't think overheating on cable discs is a problem so don't really need them on roadie. Fuck it I'll just get the cheap ones

  • Back again, are the finned inserts worth the extra?

Nah, unless you're doing alpine descend in the scouring heat where you want to prevent the brakes from overheating.

(admittedly having done that with cheap Clark pads at 30 degrees, it still didn't fade).
