  • I run almost exclusively in rapha baselayers for this reason among others.

  • I get on with most techy t-shirts for long training runs, but require product under my race vest for anything over HM. Generally use Vaseline for nips and crotch, although I tried out Bodyglide for the first time at London this year and it's really good.

Big race coming up this Sunday, the Southern Road Relays at Crystal Palace Park. We're 4-on-the-trot champions in the Vet-40 champs, with a good chance to defend, although word has it Herne Hill will be strong. I'm the only ever-present team member, although on current form I'm slowest runner for this year's team. I'd best not be shit! Will be doubling up to do the final leg for our D-team (!) in the Senior champs which is run in the same race. All good mileage.

  • I am thankful to not have the nipple chafe issue. Even 17 and a half hours running in the same technical running shirt last year couldn't do it. Sorry, not helpful just thought I'd chime in.

  • With merino or 100% synthetic?

  • wear synthetic over the top. merino underneath

  • Consider yourself lucky, seems like 50% of synthetic shirts give me sore nips. I run way too hot for a base layer so need to bust the Vaseline out.
Gave your belt and bottle combo a run, surprisingly comfy and accessible, thanks 👍

  • I've used these with decent success in marathons before as well.

need to take care applying to just the nip but they'll stay on until you want them to come off if you do.

  • I think that a mixture of sweating, hairy chest, sodden top and wind can wreak havoc on my nipples.

Vaseline normally does the trick, I've not tried anything else, but in the winter a tight top underneath is my go to. I don't do that in summer because I'd probably die from heat exhaustion

  • While talking about synthetic tops. I stink in synthetic tops. End up taking 2 tops to the gym if I'm running home after. Merino is a bit toasty. Cotton just ends up sodden.
Any brands or materials that do a decent job of tempering bacteria?

  • I read somehting about this a while back (can't remember where, sorry). Basically the really smelly bacteria love synthetic material as a surface to grow on when compared to cotton or other organic materials, so good news - this is not something specific to you, we all stink!

Doesn't answer your question though, sorry.

  • I soak everything in antibacterial wash if it gets too bad - other than hot washing, not much else ifs going to kill the bacteria.

Even cotton and merino honk eventually though

  • I give my tops a day on the washing line in the hot sun after use, before they went in for a wash - seemed to help keep the smell at bay. My oldest in rotation are 4-5 years old and I most definitely sweat!

  • We’ll soon see if they get noticeably stinkier as we get less sun...

  • You can buy 'silver lined' yarn technical garments now, the silver is meant to discourage bacteria... hmm.

You can also spray your clothes post-run to kill bacteria, although using the sun's rays, or your freezer is probably a better bet. There are in-wash options that supposedly leave a residue behind that makes for a less ideal breeding ground... again, this seems like overkill.

Buy natural fibres -> Immediately wash your clothes -> Profit?

  • i put my clothes in for an immediate 15 minute wash and its worked pretty well so far

  • Every few months I do wash all of my technical stuff in a wash with some plain white vinegar added to the detergent in the drawer. Seems to work for me.

  • I run topless - no nipple chaffing and less washing.

Got in trouble when I went bottomless mind.

  • What's going on with the Strava leader board by the way?

    Is everyone resting this week?

  • Oh cool, might try and make it down there one Saturday. Closer than Platt Fields for me.

  • I'd forgotten about that, still in recovery mode but pushed a bit too much at yesterday's club hill session. Knees thanking me for it today!

  • Yes! Life is intervening.

  • Is everyone resting this week?

Injured. Again...Found a great physio off the back of it though, so it’s not all bad.

  • I’m at Center Parcs this week with the fam and intended to run everyday until I rolled my ankle this morning. I’m pissed off, wife’s pissed off, kid’s pissed off daddy can’t chase him. Le sigh
Edit: also I just bought a couple of these Alpkit shirts that said they had some anti-bac magic, I just throw stuff on a quick wash ASAP. https://www.alpkit.com/products/koulin-trail-tee-mens

  • First run back post Ridgeway where I didn't feel awful.

    We're back baby!

  • 23:29 for my after work run round Forest Hill. Getting slowly faster.
