  • Trend is fine for the money. Not so bad when you go through a nail either.

  • What are the funny tails behind the blade tips for the 40T about?

Shoulders. Supposed to reduce kick back

  • we have a good 3cm or so needed, really thinking of going for some sort of foot/riser rather than the hacking method..

in other news, my first attempt at painting went well.

Nest thermostat arrived today so this evenings task is trying to install that

  • Ta, went for the trend.

  • If you’re are like this then it should be realitively easier to do

  • Not following?

  • whoah whoah hello 70s

  • My soon to be father in law, upon seeing the collection of woodworking tools I have been amassing last night has offered to give me a soon to be cut down walnut tree in front of his house. (Perhaps his idea of a wedding gift!?)

As a fully fledged city boy who has never seen a saw mill, should I say yes to this most generous offer? Would I be able to get any usable timber out of it? It's ~0.5m diameter at the base so I've been told.

  • 48 x 19 FTW

  • You could get someone with a portable saw mill to chop it up on site. Unless you want to work it green (not sure if that’s a thing with walnut, more common with oak or larch) you’d then have to store it properly to let it dry out. Roughly a year per inch thickness of board.

  • Take it!

Have it planked (or DIY with an Alaskan mill), and store it.

While it's drying and seasoning, practice on cheaper wood.

Or get someone to make something from it of or you (a colleague did this with a pear tree).

  • Cheers @dbr @TW .

I'll do the making of whatever project I can think for it. It's just the planking and storing part I have no experience with. Can either of you recommend someone I could hire to just come and plank it for me? I'll investigate the chainsaw mill but suspect I'll get a better result if i just pay someone to do it.

For storage, is the deepest darkest corner of my garage suitable? Do I need to treat it or anything?

  • You want airflow really. We've been gifted some oak so in a similar position. Joiner FIL said to just put it outside, off the ground on sticks and well covered.

  • Garage will be fine if you can give up the space for a while. As @umop3pisdn says, it's good practice to keep it off the ground, just a couple of lengths of pine or something underneath will help. You could also put dividers between each plank if you're really committed to sparklemotion. Make sure you don't forget/put off using it though : ) My dad probably took about 4 tons of oak and cedar from the farm when we left it 20 odd years ago. He's still got most of it and has brought it with him to every house he's been at since.

I've got a dozen planks in the alley outside covered with a tarp and off the ground. It'll be fine for as long as it takes me to figure what I want to do with the stuff.

  • If I can keep it outside that's a bonus. The garage is tiny and space is at a premium. I can probably set up some pond liner on the ground and pine spacers without too much difficulty, and cover with some more pond liner. Any risk of rotting or anything like that?

@CYOA I'd be more than happy to take some of that oak off your hands :)

  • I’d guess that a loft would be too warm, might end up with banana planks.

  • Would there be a risk of introducing wood-eating larvae or assorted forms of fungal rot to the roof space?

  • So farrow and ball are introducing 9 new colours!!!!!!! and having an event at Shoreditch Village underground to announce it from 20-23rd of september.

  • Beard Black, Vinyl Black, Cold Pressed Espresso, Avocado Shell, Dalston White Lines, Chicken Shop Blue, Fixie Baby Blue, Vintage Denim & Dusty Album Cover.

    A good choice of colours.

  • You thought of going into the paint naming game?

  • Any one want a tesco corded hammer drill? Some times the motor produces visible sparks...

Comes with comedy drill bits and a case.

  • Me naming colours probably dates back to the days when I was mixing paint on site and had to give the interior designer a name for the clients. :)

  • Could it go up in the rafters of the garage where you were thinking of storing the cutting table?
