Chas/nico seem to have a great spirit for it, having fun but definitely there to meet the checkpoints and not cruise it

That's the mash guys?
They better take it seriously after last year. They had a flight back to the states very early into the race which meant they would never have made it to meteora. They didn't realise how bad that looked and were a bit shocked by the criticism they got. -

Initially when I met them I had some skepticism but I grew to like them due to their contagious enthusiasm.
From what I understand they’re taking it seriously - but it still may be primarily an Instagram opportunity.

What these folks did sounds like touring. And I don't see the word touring in the title of this event.

Thanks for that - I’d read that a while back but certainly agree.
The thing I’ve always about these races is the two types of fun: 1 and 2. The first type of fun (1) is the ‘nice’ parts of the race like eating a delicious meal with another rider or cycling a great descent. The second type of fun (2) is more persistent - its the stuff I remember still fling till this day and that I cherish like finishing the race or cycling through Durmitor national park shivering my ass off at 3am.
This race is all about the the type 2 and that is definitely perpetuated by the race element of the TCR. Without the race part you’d just chill out when things got tough.

@MisterTomTom @7ven keep going guys - you’re doing super well.
@rj you’re doing incredibly well - I’ve washed your shorts and they’re ready to be sent to yours - as soon as you get to Greece :)

They realized that they made some people quite angry by never intending to finish and apolgized. Guess they will give all they have this time round.

I still think that it might not have their true intention to quit — I think they would’ve thought it would’ve been better to quit due to another race rather than just wimping out.
The race does crazy things to you and there are times where you’re thinking about the most credible ways of scratching. As @hippy said and something I was guilty of was leaving bikes out near petrol stations unlocked in the slight hope they’d stolen.
The amount of times I thought of quitting these races was crazy but I never thought I had credible reason.

The other person who got criticised last year for not respecting the spirit of the race was Ian To. He was going well in about third or fourth but then panicked when the road in Romania was banned on safety grounds. When he said he was stopping racing and just going to tour the last stage, it didn't go down well.

That is so true. Lack of a good reason to stop, and also knowing I would immediately and always regret it so much if I did stop when I could have carried on.

He was also an arse at one of the checkpoints, all on video. Can’t remember the details but I do remember it got my back right up.

One person you have missed off your list who has certainly posted on here and who is always of interest is Stéphane Ouaja #12.

This spirit of the race chat.
Isn't it more likely that people realise they've bitten off more than they can chew? -

I’m currently working on one that stock, was 7.8kg before changing more stuff.
Which one is this? Have you got a link?

And people's mood at checkpoints etc is likely to be affected by fatigue and pain?
-
• #2073
I get it...but then at the same time I don't. I don't think Hippy is on his TT rig. Or is he?!
Hippy, like almost rider, will be riding on the bike they think will be quickest for them over the total route (subject to financial constraints).

Love the frankness. This thread and the facebook page are great whenever the race is on.
That’s what I thought I’ll try donit now and again maybe try come up with a more compact way to do it.
Yeah they are quite far apart, hopefully amicable. Riding as a pair would be tough I think.
