you guys not all riding surly long haul truckers? weird
-
• #928
Yeah, some hubs you can remove the freehub just by pulling it off, also straight pull spokes apparently can be fitted without removed cassette
-
• #929
Just one of each length.
Franks right that I can’t replace most of then, as centre lock disc also!
But it’s more for if I go to a bike shop. Like you said before rather have and not need. They’re so light and take no space.
In honesty if I broke a spoke I’d just tighten the spokes either side and ride on.

That's me.

You could also just snap a spoke by bad luck. They weigh nothing and take no space.
Only one thing on TCR is infinitely dense.

I did buy a Kevlar emergency spoke and was going to take it in 2016 but ditched it at the last minute to save space. I don't know if it would have been any use or a bit of a gimmick.

@7ven how about a spare mech hanger, especially if it’s specific to the frame. I had mates who snapped a canyon one while touring in Greece. Not easy to find.
-
• #934
Very good point on that, a must. I always carried one untill I went steel inbuilt.
-
• #935
Sounds sensible. Need to drop the broken frame back so will grab one then!
-
• #936
I carried one for the 4S and then snapped the frame in Jan and sold the hanger recently.
Didn't bother with a spare hanger for the Tripster. Maybe I should get one with TCR on rougher roads.

Fuck it.
If the RD goes into the back wheel, I'm walking to the next pub and then calling Uber.
-
• #939
Rear derailleur hanger takes way longer to get in the sticks/is more specific than the derailleur.

Singlespeed for dayz. It's not like there's much climbing in TCR.
-
• #941
Try making 11 speed work as an emergency singlespeed. Tried twice this year. Always shifts up. Very not fun.
-
• #942
Shifts up? How?
With or without a RD? -
• #943
Shifts up on its own. Theres so little space on 11 speed the chain catches the next cog, then it shifts, chain tension becomes very high, you can't pedal anymore and the wheel is really hard to remove.
Happy to be proven wrong, but until someone shows me a working singlespeed botch with 11 speed stuff I say it doesn't work. Maybe if you're real lucky with the combination of chainline and chain lengt thats available. I remember that I managed a long time ago with 8 speed.

I had the same problem at brother in the wild. Also leads to a destroyed cassette and a very expensive weekend out.
The solution for single speeding is to apparently reverse the order of some of cogs so the step up is too high.
-
• #945
And then you're back on to the cassette tool problem
-
• #946
At least my cassette still works.
Edit:
Change cog order makes sense. But yes, no cassette tool. If I was to go remote places I would probably opt for 8 speed. -

Think it was Frank that suggested tying the cable to the bottle cage after it happened to me. I haven't tried this yet. Hoping never to have to!

• #948
When you say up, do you mean down, to a bigger cog?
If it's shifting to a smaller cog, the tension would be less and you'd be dropping a chain, no?Were you using RD as tensioner or trying to run magic gear?
-
• #949
The GCN solution is to knot the cable in the barrell adjuster
But that's no help if your derailleur is dead.

Cables? What is this, 2008?
Dt Swiss rearhub?
Pretty sure I can pull the whole freewheel and cassette off without tools.
