  • It won't fit. OLD is not the problem but 7 speed bodies don't take 8 speed cassettes.

  • Yeah I guess it would be new wheel time to go up to 8 speed. Looks like best range you can do on 7-speed is 14-34 - which isn't absolutely terrible...

There is also the 9/10 speed cassettes for just a few pounds more but the shifters will be more expensive as well and there are some compatibility issues

  • If you choose to remain with 7 speed:
There are ST-A410 Shimano RSX road STI's that are 7s and will work just fine with any Shimano RD of that era. I use these on an 1x7 setup, they work fine, but might be hard to find in a proper condition.

Your other main choice could be microSHIFT STI's from AliExpress/Amazon/anywhere you can find. They too make Shimano compatible 7s variants.

Also you can use post-2001 9sp Campagnolo Ergopower shifters, the lower end models should be quite cheap if you buy them used. They work flawlessly with the 7sp Shimano casette and RD. (This works with 10s Campag + 8s Shimano setups as well. Shimagnolo is underrated!)

Cool bike by the way, if you make a CP thread I'll deffo follow it. :)

  • Might be selling my Bridgestone MB, it's either a zip or 1, has been repainted before I got it so can't confirm, had the zip turbo saddle though!
    Anyone after a new whip?

  • Have just been thinking of looking for a Bridgestone of late. Two friends have found MB1's and have made nice builds out of them. I'm probably better off looking for one out here though. I wouldn't have thought you'd have a problem selling yours if you advertise it. They've definitely got a following.

  • My DB Axis '92 in commuter mode.

  • Nice! Turbos and the other saddles in that style just look so right on retro MTBs.

  • Thanks! Yeah, but unfortunately it's not very comfortable for me with this setup. Didn't have time to hunt for a better one yet. :)

  • Is it an avocet O2?

  • Looks like this, got no other info. Probably made in 1991. But unfortunately the rear got scratch/torn a bit when I got hit... I can take a pic from its underside if you want. :)

  • May be a stupid question, but should band-on thumb shifters be mounted to the inside or outside of brake levers?

    X0 thumbies and DX levers.

  • Inside

  • I think it depends how much leverage you need on the brake levers. If you can get away with 2 fingers or so then it's better to have the levers inboard and leave your last fingers free to hold the very end of the bars. If your brakes are crap and you need all four fingers then that'll maybe necessitate having the brakes outboard of the shifter.

  • Mate and I went 90s MTB bikepacking to reasonable success. Mine's the 1991 Dyna Tech, his is the Specialized. Love the crazily over engineered lugs and wishbone stays on mine.

  • My friend needs to sell my ex-bike to fund a folder. Tragic, I know. If anyone's interested in a retrotastic Stumpjumper with decent paint but tatty decals, HMU.

Saddle's been swapped out for something generic but I think I could dig out the old Thomson stem

  • Bought this Cinelli a while ago as a 'barn find'. It was apparently bought and used for a year then the owner emigrated to NZ. He left it in his parents garage and it sat there for years unused.

Luckily the flouro fades are still (nearly) like new with the paint only faded a little in a couple places. Can only find a couple others online and they have faded nearly to white. So quite lucky on this one.
