  • I'll see how easy it is to open up. I don't want to mess about with it too much though. @Stonehedge, when you say you've seen a lot of long service Omegas, is this a particularly common model, are Omegas well known for being given as gifts for long service? I honestly know nothing about watches so don't be afraid to be patronising.

  • Based on what I have seen/owned I think Omega was the usual choice for long service awards in the UK. I've owned gold and steel omegas issued for long service by East Midlands Gas, British Rail, several accountancy firms and a bank.

In terms of models, I've seen Seamaster 600 more than anything which is visually very similar to your one. I sold a long service Omega to @Tenderloin recently, perhaps he has some photos. I don't know ow what your model is though as the dial is sterile and the movement will be the biggest clue.

I did some calculations a few years ago, trying to figure out whether these watches have appreciated or depreciated in value since they were given. Based on a 1960s and a 1970s one that I used to own, they seem to be worth almost exactly what they were when originally purchased when adjusted for inflation . In the case of my ones, about £300. There will of course be rarities and oddities which are more collectable depending on model and condition.
