Most welcome
Now why do I have two gear calculators bookmarked...
-
• #228
which ones? Link me pls

I've got this one bookmarked for IGH and drayliers: I like it because you can drag the sprockets for non-standard set-ups (and remove them altogether) and also compare two set-ups.

next question; 50mm chainline cranks + alfine = death (of the chain)?
Its for Surly ECR and M7000 cranks.

I'd like to fit a 3 speed IGH to a 120mm spaced frame. What options do I have?

sturmey archer, maybe SRAM, and possibly old shimano...

@chrismac - http://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/detail/aw
SA do two OLNs on the AW hub one is circa 117mm -
• #236
thanks both- wonder what chainline will be.... with an SA hub or an older shimano 3 speed
-
• #237
I think both shimano and sa chainline can be tweaked as they can use dished sprockets. Not sure what the standard is though. Does it not mention in the pdf i linked to?
-
• #238
It does indeed, 43 to 46mm depending on model

I've got some unused/take-off parts from a Speedhub build: looking for 50% of the list price.
NB The sprocket carrier is the wide chainline version that come fitted as standard, not as described on the bag.

I am planning to fit an IGH to my singlespeed commuter (Vitus Dee), not sure whether to choose Sturmey Archer 3 speed or Alfine 8. S-A is lighter, from what I heard less draggy and possibly more bombproof (simpler design) keeping the bike essentially SS with extra gears for up and downhills, while Alfine is more expensive and heavier, but possibly could let me also do some more trips on hilly routes as kind of 'extended commute rides'.
What would you choose? For most of 'free time riding' apart from commuting I have a Ti Pickenflick CX, here the most important is low maintenance and resistance to rust, winter salt etc., while keeping me going all year around. -

@PRz Is the OLN a factor? What about braking, stick with a disc, can the SA do that?
I like the Alfines/Nexus and once you've serviced them once or twice it's quite quick and easy.
Seen this post about a recent Alfine service and use?

The Alfine/Nexus 8 or 11 speed hubs are silent. A Sturmey Archer 3-speed is not. Which may seem like a small detail, but for me it was not.

I've used internally geared hubs from Sturmey, Sachs (Sram), Shimano and Rohloff and the only one I would go out of my way to avoid would be Sturmey.
-
• #244
What didn't you like about sturmey? I've had a couple of year's use of my 3 speed now and it's been perfect
-
• #245
Just felt vague, flimsy and cheaply made compared to the others.

I had an pretty ancient 3 speed that seemed alright st the time, but then I tried others and realised it’d actually been pretty shonky then I had a newer 5 speed I think which had either a coaster or drum brake and just nothing about that hub was very nice.

Guess I can post my monstrosity in here to.
Hands down, the most fun I have ever had on a biek.

As an update, I got an offer to buy used Alfine 8 Di2, where the complete set will cost me about 60% of new Alfine 8 mechanical hub. When adding cost of shifter etc., this looks quite appealing and from what I heard Di2 is really smooth shifting and there is no more hassle with cable tension and wheel removal.
S-A still remains as a budget option, probably would cost about 30-40% of that Alfine set at maximum.
Also I am a bit worried that equipping the commuter bike with Di2 can make it unwise to lock unattended outside, what is one of main points of this bike. -

I have a genesis day one di2, and apart from the small gear indicator screen you wouldn’t know that it was di2.
It’s my everyday commuter/work bike so get locked up everyday outside and doesn’t garner any extra attention from
anyone..
ta very much sir
