  • I've been running Blokada from f-droid which seems to me very similar. Only issue is you can't run it with a VPN.

    Amazing how much is blocked, about 20,000 items per week!

  • I rooted my Pixel XL. Then I realised that I used Android Pay all the time and went back to stock.

  • Looking to buy an Xperia z5 compact, best reliable price i can find new is on amazon. Any suggestions on where else to look or is it worth considering refurbished?

  • Sony XZ1 Compact is getting cheaper, but still more than Z5c

  • Have a look on eGlobal.

  • It's been a week since I ordered new phone from eGlobal

    Turned up unannounced yesterday, so just over a week. Not bad.

    Err... What do I do now?

  • They don't have any unfortunately. Have looked at newer compacts but they're a bit more than I want to spend i think

  • Ah, there were some a few weeks back; i nearly bought one before opting for a OnePlus.

    They seem to come and go so may be worth checking in a couple of days.

    Edit: sorry, misread. Thought you were after xz compact.

  • I use DNS66 atm, have you used that and can you compare?

  • See I never use it, I do I suspose my credit card app wouldn't work though...

  • I've tried both and prefer Blokada, it seems to block more. In theory though they're pretty similar so it may just be that I have stricter hosts files set-up. Blokada seems to persist a bit better than DNS66. It's easy enough to install and give it a test.

    Worth thinking what else would stop working if you rooted. Virgin and Sky apps both refuse to work on rooted devices as does 4OD or something similar. Most banking apps also won't run.

  • Sadly not compatible with my version of android I just checked.

  • So, all good with eGlobal, set up new phone (OnePlus 5T), nice phone etc, all fine. But...

    OnePlus have disabled the android Do Not Disturb feature cos they have put a physical switch on the side of the phone, like an iPhone has.

    This is a big step backwards; auto DND for nights and DND for fixed times (eg one hour for a one hour meeting) is a great feature and just having a switch on the side of the phone is definitely not as good as far as I'm concerned (because if it's left to me to have to operate said switch, it will mainly be on when i want it off and vice versa - I know that cos I have an iPhone for work).

    Bit annoyed about that, as are a load of people complaining about it on the OP forum.

  • My Nexus5x has just turned into a brick.

    What's a cheap & cheerful phone to get as a temporary replacement?

  • What happened? I and others have got them serviced by LG because the processors are a bit shite, might be worth a punt

  • It's already had the motherboard replaced last year - That time it could at least be booted into recovery / bootloader. This time, it's entirely dead.

    I'll be looking to have LG repair it under warranty again.

  • Had a TV crew in during the week for a gadget testing show and they left behind a pixel 2 they were using for apps. Hoping they won't realise and I can have it.

  • Let us know how you get on with it!

    After nearly a week with OnePlus 5T, my thoughts:

    Yes, I'm annoyed about the lack of software Do Not Disturb but in practice, the 3 position slider is pretty acceptable. I just feel that it's a solution to a problem which had already been solved, and solved better;

    The screen is great, and I particularly like the auto brightness and night mode;

    Camera is good, as good as any phone camera I've used;

    Battery lasts two days and charges in a couple of hours - that's pretty handy;

    It's slick and quick; it does everything that I need a phone to do, to a high standard. It's pleasant to use.

    In conclusion? At £380, it's the most expensive phone I've bought and the top end of what I would be prepared to spend. Is it £250 nicer than a new Moto G? Hard to say, depends on how much you need £250, I guess. I self justified it as have a long commute where I read papers etc on my phone, and I don't change phones often.

    If it lasts 3 years, which I hope it will and my Moto G (3rd gen) did, that'll be slightly over £10/month which seems acceptable. If I was shopping for a phone tomorrow, I'd probably buy it again.

  • Anyone else had problems recently with Google's Calendar app not sending notifications you've set? I have one that's been set for years to go off at 18:20 every day reminding me to take my epilepsy medicine evening dose, but in the last few weeks it sometimes just doesn't bother and sometimes does it as normal. The events are still there in the diary with the notification attached if I open the app and check so I don't know why I'm not getting them.

  • Sue Google!! What you taking? Baclofen? Tegretol?

  • Tegretol, yeah; actually a relatively low daily dose and I only get temporal lobe seizures but based on my experience if I miss the bigger evening dose my brain does not enjoy it. I submitted a feedback report to Google just now so I'm hoping someone will take a look at it.

  • Gmail has stopped notifications on my part

  • Use your alarm instead, I find that pretty reliable... Can be nasty stuff that Tegretol, my gf had to come off it as it was depleting her sodium levels and causing, guess what? Seizures!

  • I know there's history of Nexus 5x issues but has anyone has experienced slow down/lag rather than the dreaded bricking?

    My phone is 1.5 years old and hasn't skipped a beat until the last month or so. The phone is running Android 8.1.0. It lags a lot across a lot of apps. Instagram stories works particularly badly. Searching in Chrome and URL input lags. It takes a while to load up the keyboard when typing generally.

    Anyone else had this and got any bright ideas to make it faster?

  • Use your alarm

    ↑This. Been doing it for years for drug dosing/health monitoring reminders, never fails.
