Does anyone know anything about gardening?

  • I raked the front lawn and nearly filled the wheelie bin with thatch and moss. We've had a ton of rain since then and I read a metal rake will break the grass roots and encourage new growth in a couple of weeks.

  • Thanks both.

I had it looking like this last summer, it doesn't look like this now :(

  • Oh wow, that looks (looked) great. You live in a Palace or something? I'm impressed with the width (fnar) or your garden for mine is long and narrow.

  • Must be a flattering angle, it's definitely longer than it is wide.

  • Wife and I damn near lost the plot in the garden centre looking at Acers today, we were about to spend ~£500 before we snapped out of it and walked straight out the place. They were nice and mature but with perspective that’s some crazy money.

  • Were you at Tendercare on the old A40 near Denham?

  • Not that crazy, when you consider you could wait at least 5 years to grow something to that sort of size. And if it is from Tendercare they do good stock. Coblands cash and carry down and Sevenoaks can work out well if you can wangle a trade card. Why not try growing yerself a nice Cornus kousa, it'll grow a site quicker has some flowers and a very interesting fruit you can eat to boot

  • I miss my mum's old David Brown 885 small and gutless but it's still running after nearly 50 years

  • Still not very skilled in the operation of forums, but loving this thread. I'm a landscape architect with no garden and am forced to enjoy gardening vicariously, also very skilled in the art of fruit tree pruning if anyone ever needs any assistance/advice

  • Oooh, my internet famous apple tree may need some advice over the next few years as I espalier it. Good to have you here!

  • I have ten columns / minarets on the go. Expect pruning questions a plenty.

  • Were you at Tendercare on the old A40 near Denham?

No, this was in the Wyvale in Tring - I FaceTimed my mum to get a second opinion when we were there and she said much better value could be had at Smiths garden centre which is a stones throw from ^ Tendercare. Got caught in the moment, might go back and get the first green one (Acer Palmatum ‘koto no Ito’) because it was my favourite.

  • How much garden waste will a composter get through? Would rather not have to keep paying the council for garden waste collections if I can avoid it! My garden is small but very bushy so at the moment there is a lot of weeds, pruning etc to get through.

  • That looks ace!

  • Lovely

  • A garden shredder makes juat about all garden prunings compostable.

  • Impact shredders are cheaper than roller models. The starting price is around £100, although we'd recommend spending around £200 to get a really good model.

    Not gonna happen :-(

I guess might as well get a composter (£22 from the council) for food waste and weeds etc, and if it can handle smaller pruning debris, so much the better

  • Are you in London?

  • No, Bristol, why?

  • Stripes!

  • I do! I have a small espalier pear tree in my allotment that I don't know what to do with :/

  • I have 15 cucumber seedlings. Tokyo Slicer variety.

No one I can grow them all. Who wants? Would love chillies in return.

    They are in Herne Hill.

  • Asked in the house plants thread but does anyone have any bamboo plants they’d like to sell/give away. I’m looking to replace two that live on my balcony, that aren’t doing so well..
    Let me know

  • I have a rather substantial rosemary bush and plan to propogate a few cuttings.
If they take, I'll offer them up on here.
It's been feral in the garden, so is quite hardy to harsh winters and the like.

  • Great work, you just need to work on getting them straight next time.
