  • Anyway I'll wait until after the Big Half this weekend - my first half marathon - to start thinking / looking for a new pair.

Yes, don't wear new shoes for a race. (Well, only wear new shoes for a race/run that you'd be happy not to finish if they were giving you pain/discomfort.)

I tend to have 2 or 3 pairs of trainers (of any particular type, i.e. 2 pairs of road shoes, 2 pairs of trail shoes) on the go at any one time. Makes it easier if one pair are still wet from the day before, I also keep a pair of at work in case I want to go for a lunch time run.

I use Strava to keep track of the distances they've done (easier if each pair is a different colour) and only retire them when they're falling apart or there's next to no cushioning left. I'd never retire them just because they'd done x miles. Last ones were retired at ~450 miles but that's because I was doing shuttle runs with my daughter in the garden and ripped the upper away doing a quick turn.

Didn't run in to work this morning. Combination of hangover, being late and the pavements being lethal everywhere and there's no easy offroad option for me.

Hopefully parkrun will be on tomorrow morning although I'll just go for a run if it isn't anyway.

[EDIT] I got a lot more than 450 miles out of one pair though: http://www.greenbank.org/misc/IMG_7290.JPG

  • To check for mid sole wear/compression, remove the insole and feel for notable depressions where your heel and forefoot bones are. With a finger inside and on the outside of the sole, you should be able to gauge how compressed they are.

  • Managed 0.2mi run today before deciding it was too dangerous. Would rather not have to try and parent 2 children with a broken arm thanks. Turbo tonight instead then :/

  • Bath HM cancelled. Arse! Don't suppose anyone else (Senior Male) has a Big Half place they're not using?

  • Ran around in Richmond Park yesterday - Inov-8 Roclites did the trick, although it turns out that chewed up bridle paths that have frozen solid are a challenge for anyone's proprioception.

    Did not lean

It also turns out that if I cross the road at the end of the road-free loop that I run (something which has taken over 4 years to do), I can run along the river for almost 10k. Which will be tomorrow morning's route.

    I am disappoint.

  • Anyone who is aiming for 72 minutes so as not to cause any issues with positions and awards....

Osterley parkrun is currently on, which is remarkable.

  • Heh! In all seriousness I reckon it would be ok as long as I'm not troubling any prize categories, and my result would look relatively obscure in a strong field. Or I could run 12 and a bit laps of Dulwich Park as fast as possible.

  • 12 and a bit laps of Dulwich park sounds almost as bad as 25 laps of a track. At least on the track your distance markers remain the same rather than getting closer each lap at Dulwich.

  • Innov Trailrocs coming up trump's for general snow walking and shuffling running for me. Good grip on the icy bits as well.

  • + hat

    + gloves

    + buff

Summer shorts though. Which goes some way to explain the chaffing...

  • Berkhamsted Half...cancelled.

I'm quite relieved to be honest, did not want to hammer that downhill on icy roads.

  • Is the Big Half likely to be cancelled, do people think?

  • They were carrying on with the setup in Greenwich Park this afternoon.
Tomorrow is forecast not to snow...

Honestly no clue, they're deciding tomorrow afternoon.

  • I'm holding out for the snow to be melted by Sunday afternoon, need todo an 11 miler in preparation for the Reading Half Marathon in two weeks.

  • Parkrun is still on, I’m taking the dog!

  • Reckon everything here will be clear by Sunday.

  • I won't be using mine if you want it? I'm over in Leyton and will be around from about 4.30 onwards

  • Hi,
I'm not using mine. You know my housemate Sean (runs with Kent) - I can give my entry stuff to him if that suits you? Message me if you fancy it :)

  • Right @quincy, I think i've got your place! Small world.

    Let's do this.

  • Maybe...?
I just told my housemate he could offer it out :)

  • Marvellous! :)

  • Mo is there for the taking tomorrow lfgss Big Half runners!
