  • Perfect, thanks v much

  • I did a piece for Field about the build process and my thoughts on custom.

It's up on their site now for anyone who's interested

    http://www.fieldcycles.com/latest

  • Bit of a dredge, but the Field will have some repair work/replacement parts.

Just before Christmas I was hit from behind by a car (for the second time in two years) whilst training before work. I was lucky not to refracture my skull and wrist, and managed to come out of it with only a couple of very deep cuts to my face and a badly broken finger.

In short, it means a good number of parts will be changed (some from necessity, some purely for cosmetics, some just because I will get an insurance payout that’ll cover them). Luckily, the frame and fork seem to be fine, aside from a little paint damage.

Now I’m debating, if I’m replacing a fair amount of my groupset, do I change/upgrade my groupset or not...

  • thats horrible .. hope you have healed up well.

Is bad driving a problem in Japan?

  • Not as such. I think the roads can be super busy and, historically at least, bikes aren’t on the road and traveling a similar speed to traffic (‘mamacharis’ on the pavement are the norm).

Since the last incident, I’ve been riding on quieter, mostly broader roads. However, this didn’t stop this guy hitting me (his front left hit the rear right of my back wheel and stayed in contact long enough that there was a carbon/rubber wheel-shaped mark on his bodywork).

Still healing (pins come out of my hand next Friday, all being well), so the Field is in with my mechanic here in the meantime.

  • heal up quick!

  • Thanks, man! Will try!

  • Jesus Dom, glad you're okay, by and large. Heal up.

  • Cheers, Jake. Honestly feel like I’ve had shit luck, bike-wise, over the past couple of years.

Hope that sorting the bike and maybe changing the places/situations I ride in future changes that.

  • Hey, I've just read the whole thread in one breath.
    Lovely build!
I was thinking of ISP on my frame, but decided not to at the end... might change that with next one.
Get well soon and update us as much as possible. :)

  • Thank you.

As for ISP, definitely something I’m happy with. If the bike fit is right, can be a great thing!

  • So the things I’m thinking of upgrading:

    1. Groupset to eTap Red HRD
    2. PM (probably Quarq D-Zero)
    3. King Cage cages (Ti)
    4. Look Keo Blade Carbon
  • Personally think the King stainless cages with the thinner guage of tubing look far sleeker than the fat tubed Ti ones.

I like the Ti ano Minoura Dura Cage 4.5 too, far cheaper and lighter than the stainless Kings though in the details the finish isnt quite the same level.

    Mine >>

Sounds like bad luck out on the roads out there. I've only travelled by car around Saitama/West Tokyo and doubt I'd enjoy much by bike - similar to further north around Tochigi, narrow roads, a lot of traffic, not much space to pass.

  • Thanks for the input, man.

Yeah I live out Yokohama way now and the roads can still have that same ‘West Tokyo’ issue (shit loads of cars on narrow-ish roads).

However, genuinely think I have shit luck, especially given my friends don’t have these issues (hit from behind without warning twice in two years is pretty terrible luck...).

  • So the things I’m thinking of upgrading:

    Groupset to eTap Red HRD
    PM (probably Quarq D-Zero)
    King Cage cages (Ti)
    Look Keo Blade Carbon

If you have the chance to upgrade, there is no better electronic hydro groupset than R9170.

I just couldn't live with the shape and size of those ridiculous ETap hydro Hoods, plus, braking and shifting feel of the new Dura Ace ST-R9170 is out of this world.

Dont forget also that sram etap has been around for quite some time now and is still gen1.

The look and feel of the DA hyrdo shifters is incredible, and for aesthetics nothing else can match it.

The rest, is spot on, Quarq power meters are awesome, king ti are awesome and Look Keo Blade carbon are the best pedals out there.

  • Never tried R9170 but 9000 and 9100 are awesome.

Quarq meters are good, but I'd be tempted to go for a P2M instead for better reliability.

    King Ti - agreed, excellent.

Personally I don't get on with Keo Blade carbon pedals on the road, due to the fact that they don't hang naturally in the right position to clip in. I use them on the track, but for the road I prefer SPD-R.

  • Cheers, chaps.

@Dick , I’d be coming from R785 shifters, so it’d be much the same shape as eTap. If hood shape is an issue (going to see in store), I’d move to new Ultegra instead of DA, if I didn’t go for eTap. If Ultegra, I’d probably go P2M with Rotor instead of Quarq (NG Eco), @danstuff !

I’d actually been using Keo Max 2 for years and liked them, but they don’t have the ‘solid’ base like the Blades so don’t have quite the same issue you’re talking about. Shall have a little more of a think...

  • Sorry, yeah, i forgot that R8070 was available now - the ONLY reason i went with the DA9170 was because ultegra wasn t out yet.

R785 are a nicer shifter look and shape than etap - had the DA not come out by the time i needed them id have stuck with R785 (i actually bought R785 as first choice at the time of first buying the frame - by the time the paint was done and cured DA9170 had arrived!)

  • On the Open, right?

As an aside, really nice build, mate @Dick

  • Indeed!

And thank you, it’s been very fun!

  • And, fuck me, You’ve had some shit luck.
I thought I was reading an old thread when scrolling through IG/LFGSS about the latest rear ending you’ve had.

Really hope you’re ok, and that you heal up quick.

  • I endorse 9170 P2M and ti King Cages. It’s what I have on the Isen and all are great.

  • Amazing bike, sorry to hear about your accidents, heal up fast.

Me and my GF read your epic Japan road trip story yesterday as we're planning to do some touring out there this year, very inspiring!

  • By all means, get in touch. Happy to give any advice about where to tour, etc., if wanted/needed.
