  • I'll add another build in here...

So eight years ago I bought this 1983 Koga-Miyata Gent's Racer from classifieds on here. It was in impeccable condition and arrived looking like this...

It wasn't until recently that I realised that it had been refinished by a previous owner and this wasn't actually the original paint job...

Original 1983 brochure entry for posterity...

Cut forward to many moons later and after letting a mate have a lend of it for a few of those years where it didn't quite get the tlc I would usually give my bikes it's a bit tired but still looking pretty...

In the time my mate had it he got rear-ended by a car and the back rim was knackered beyond repair so he kindly had it replaced with a H+Son TB14 which has since rusted and corroded quite a bit and looks pants so I've already picked up a set of Mavic Open Pro CD rims to rebuild/ build a new set of wheels...

I'm at the point now where I'm open to some suggestion as what to do, I'm tempted to go for a more modern groupset with brifters and ideally I'd fancy something black and snazzy looking, no preference for SRAM, Shimano or Campagnolo.

I'd probably get the frame refinished too but I'm really fond of the blue and white with red logos so it'll probably just be kept the same. One of the top tube cable guides is slightly damaged too so it would be nice to have that repaired.

Any suggestions for groupset and or hubs? I wouldn't mind going for a 1x10 set up but I haven't looked into what hub spacing this will work with and I'm guessing my old frame will probably be too narrow for it?

  • Why 1x?

  • No reason really, I ride mountain bikes, I like 1x. I'm in no way tied to it though, perfectly happy to keep it 2x.

  • Guess 105 would be the cheapest option?
    Solid and functional.
Matches your stated requirements of being all black.

    Lots of inspiration in here

Best keep a quill stem for the classic look?

  • Absolutely, I've been entirely motivated to this by that thread...

    This in particular.

I can't help but want to go for a higher end groupset than 105 although I know that reason would dictate that 105 is going to be so much smoother and more efficient than the current groupset anyway that anything more will be overkill... Like it's never going to be a weight weenie race bike...

  • This does make sense...

  • I like more the gun gray tone in ultegra than the dull black in 105. Or go SRAM force

  • Again due to my mountain bike affiliations I kind of would like to try SRAM... I'd love to pick up a 1st Gen Red 10 speed groupset but there are basically none for sale anywhere :(

  • Hey, if it’s from 1983 then the rear spacing will be 126mm. It’s possible that the frame won’t accommodate 11 speed drivetrain without respacing. My road bike which is 126mm as well works well with Campy 11 without respacing but on the other hand my tourer (Koga-Miyata as well) wouldn’t work with anything more the 7 speed. Might be worth checking out before committing to a 11 speed setup.

  • Thanks mate, that's the sort of thing I've been worried about! Might try an 11sp wheel in it first of all and see what clearance is like!

  • I vote SRAM Force 10, with its classic-friendly cranks. (But with an upgraded Force 22 front mech with Yaw, for better changing.) ;)

  • I've been having a think about it and it seems 10sp is definitely the way to go! I'm tempted to just take my time and aim for Dura Ace 7800/ 7900 or SRAM Red 2012...

  • Shouldn’t be an issue at all, my 1981 Batavus happily fitted an 11sp hub. Each stay only has to move 2mm

  • True enough, I reckon 7800/7900 should be near enough the balance point for me in terms of cost to be worth the spend so going to keep my eyes peeled!

  • So rather than sitting back and waiting to find a fresh groupset come along I think I might start accumulating parts as and when I find them...

Do I go for 7800 and have a more reasonably priced silver groupset or go full slave and spend a bit more for 7900 in a nice darker shade...

Answers on a postcard please, there are some nice 7800 hubs on Fleabay at the moment ending soon that will be the start of a 7800 build if that's the way to go!

  • 7900 brake calipers acquired... pics to follow on collection.

  • This is a nice groupset but please take a look at crankset and tell me you’re gonna go for a different option. ;)

  • I think I'm going to get the brakes, shifters and derailleurs and then see how I feel about keeping my current crankset or perhaps going for a 7800 set?

  • 7900 front derailleur in the bag. Common sense has gone out the window and eBay is being scoured.

  • Forty quid and Seabass cycles will cold set the rear spacing to whatever you want.

  • That's pretty reasonable I have to say but I'm living in Ireland so getting it over and back would be a bit of a faff... I have a mate who's an LBS owner I might get to do a job on it although I'd be happy enough to leave it if I go for a 130mm rear as it's 126mm at the moment... I'm going to get the groupset together and on the bike and ride it for a while before I get it refinished anyway so I can have a think in the meantime about respacing!

  • Too much text and not enough images here... Couple of pictures of purchases from their respective adverts.

    DA FD-7900

    DA BR-7900

In a moment of excitement I've only gone and done a thing on the crankset end of things and purchased a DA FC-7300 crankset too. I figured 7900 cranks are manky and 7300 is the period correct DA gruppo for the age of the bike so it should be a nice addition to an otherwise fully DA build.

  • Grabbed some Fizik tape and some new brake cables too.
