  • Isn't that the one I have? Did you ask if Carlos had any?

  • SP do colours. Just not purple

  • People with purple ano. That's what's wrong..

    #gotanyblacker

  • Oh I fully agree. Taste has never been my strong point.

What other colours would go with my bike hive mind?

  • yes you might've bought the last one or something .. they were quoting me 2 months at the time and the 12x100 SP CL isnt as cheap as their other hubs in comparison with SON

  • I did get mine a couple of years ago. It might get used again, depending on what bike I end up with.

  • Until Phil wood start making dynamo hubs I believe you’re shit out of luck..

  • @Cake as @Scrabble said, my 24h SP 9series on a 35mm crabon rim is really flexy laterally, probably because the flanges are too close together for 24spokes. Only persue your plan if you're going for disc braks (I guess you are) and can cope with some wheel flex, I'm on rim brakes and my shitty choice of parts combo has been an expensive mistake.

  • yeah disc only, but thinking about it, might as well just build a new wheelset.

32h carbon, dynamo. Vape for dayz.

  • right. thanks to my fairy godmother a SON dynamo hub will soon be in my possession.

What else do I need? I want lights and USB power. Again I don't know what I'm doing.

Bike never really runs guards, goes off road a bit.

  • You can go for the Luxus U which has integrated USB charging. Some people have had issues with water ingress on this model. Personally I haven't.

Alternatively there are a host of lights without charging to suit all budgets. IQ-x, Edelux II, Supernova are considered some of the better ones. Crown or bar mount options available for all of these. Some prettier mounts than others.

You can then run in parallel a charger, Igaro or sinewave plug or B&M USB werk are some of the brands.

  • You need to lace the hub to a rim, buy a front and rear dynamo light (rear Supernova will NOT work with SON so look for B&M or something), Igaro or some other USB charging unit. Wire them up. USB and front light from the hub, rear light in my case comes off the front light but not sure about SON.

Read every post in this and the dynamo light threads :)

  • I have a man to lace the hub to the rim!

So essentially it goes hub to front light+usb thingy, then Front light to rear right? And ceratin lights don't work with certain rear lights?

    Sounds easy...

  • I think the Supernova lights will work with the SON.

AC current to the front light, then rear connects to front light directly which is a DC signal.

  • You see my state of mind when thinking about tubeless!

As a front light I'd personnally recommend the b&m cyo premium T. Doesn't have usb charging as the luxos U does but lights up the road way better, is cheaper and you have more freedom on how what to use to do the usb bit.

  • @hippy is meaning that Supernova rear lights won't work with B&M/Schmidt front lights because they send AC to the rear lights, unlike the DC of the Supernova (as you noted).

  • IQ-X gives you similar freedom, isn't quite as cheap (although not much more now) and can me mounted upside down (massive bonus if you want to rando it up).

  • Again, I've been running a supernova taillight fine with a b&m luxos U for a bit less than a year now :) No stand light though.

  • No stand light though.

I think that's what you miss out on - the LEDs will naturally rectify the AC input and light up but the stand light's capacitor won't have any rectifying circuitry and so won't charge up.

  • Ah, the LED thing makes sense (wait - actually the connectors for rear light on the Luxos are labelled +/- so would indicate DC output?)
! Re capacitor I've read that it's the supernova front unit that takes care of it. It would make sense as the tail light is so tiny.

Someone somewhere posted a circuit schematic to have some stand light with B+M front + Supernova rear.

edit: found it; http://bemme51.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/bicycle-standlight-with-son-edelux-ii.html ; what I haven't found yet is the motivation to undertake the mod.

  • Also the connectors for rear light on the Luxos are labelled +/- so would indicate DC output?

Fair. However, the connectors on my rear B&M light (a secula) has no markings on it. The connectors on another B&M rear light I have (topline brake plus) do have markings.
However, I suspect that this may be the same as the older Marathon Supremes. They didn't have a preferred rotation direction so one wasn't marked. People were confused and continually asked them, so they put one on just to shut people up.

  • But my tail light won't light up if the connectors are plugged in one way, but will work if plugged the other way. Surely if the output was AC it wouldn't matter?

  • Interesting. Only safe* answer is to cut it all apart and draw a circuit diagram :)

This thread on YACF suggests that the Luxos U sends a half wave rectified supply to the rear so there's never a negative half of the supply and the Supernova rear light wouldn't work connected in one of the two polarities.
ie in one polarity, the LEDs are fine because they are receiving only positive half-wave pulses and so they will light. In the other polarity they are receiving only negative half-wave pulses and so never see the forward current that will make them light.

    *not safe for the light...

  • I've understood that even with AC the electricity basically comes from one of the wires and in a LED it can only get through in one direction, so if it's on the wrong connerctor, it won't light up.

  • It is easy. Just buy the stuff, buy heat shrink and wire strippers, join it, ride.
