  • It’s very likely it haven’t been torqued properly when build up, I notice this when I build up some Bromptons.

Would urges anyone with a spider ring to check it out.

  • Moving house, need to cycle to mile or so the the station, do I:

    1. Purchase the cheapest Brompton, take it on a 240 mile round trip each day without having to actually unfold it in London. Bash people of the tube, generally get in the way. Have to find storage on the train etc.
    2. Buy the cheapest bike locally that I can find and lock it up at the station and risk some ragamuffin borrowing parts from it/the whole bike and wrecking a lock each time.

Am i going to find myself wanting to skip the Jubilee line between Waterloo and London Bridge each day and enjoying a city cycle before hopping on the tube for the final part of my journey that'd require boat/submarine.
Is there a new found freedom to be found with a folding bicycle. Interested to know long distance commuting stories/experience.

  • Brompton it and skip the tube, it’s only 7 or so minutes to cycle to London Bridge.

When I was commuting on train, it save me a lots more time between home/work and stations, as we do spend a lots of time commuting where we could have waken up maybe half hour later or arrived home half hour earlier etc.

I guarantee you will find it more useful than you realised, stock 3 speed with mudguard is worth going for and have a strong resell value should you wish to rid it.

  • Plus that’s £5 every single day saved if you avoid the tube

  • So this is my only problem...
I have 1 mile from my house the the train. Then it's 2hrs into Waterloo. Quick hop on the underground and then out at Canary Wharf with an exit and escalator direct into my building. So I don't actually have to go outdoors in London!
Do I just make a conscious effort to cycle everywhere I can? So Waterloo to Canada Water? 3.3 miles, 20 mins or so and enjoy the health benefits!

@PhilDAS Tubes included with my train season ticket so no saving really.. I will only be cycling in the dry..

  • Bringing a Brompton on the tube is shit. In your situation I'd leave a bike locked up at your home station, I've did that daily for two years without incident.

  • If it were me, I'd take the brompton for the extra time on the bike over the tube; in extremis you can always take it with you underground if you have to.

  • If you're going to cycle at the London end, get a Brompton. If you're not, get a station beater. As has already been said, taking a Brompton on the tube is a PITA for you and everyone else.

  • Sounds like a station beater it is. My dad last night said I can have his 18yr old hybrid - he thinks it's only been used 3 times, little does he know I abused that thing as a teenager learning how to bunny hop and the odd endo and wheels are buckled! Original tyres though...
Will see how I get on and may revisit the Brompton in the new year if I'm still pondering avoiding the tube. Looking at resale of Bromptons its certainly not a bad investment.
    Thanks all!

  • My girlfriend has a backpack kind of shaped bag that she cycles to work with, it's pretty rectangular and holds it's shape. She's thinking about a rack or something to put it on - my first thought is a front rack / basket-bag to put it in.

What's the nicest / neatest / most aesthetically pleasing solution?

  • Actually, I'm going to TIG weld a rack from stainless tube.

Does anyone have a broken bag they'd donate the female part of the front block assembly from?

  • nope brompton's on tubes are excellent things, rush hour can be a PITA, but you know what, its the same as the rollie suitcase fuckers, if people can wedge around them, they can wedge around a brompton..

  • For a Brompton?

  • Just mod this carrier frame

I was thinking of doing the same to allow me to put a pannier on the front

  • Hmm, yeah. More I think about it the less I want to use a shitty plastic bit. Maybe I'll fold some stainless sheet to fit the mount.

I guess if I make it small enough it doesn't really need to come off either...

  • Couldn't you make your own male and female parts?

  • My chain is coming off the chainring when I unfold my M6R... When I unfold slowly it looks like the clip that holds the front wheel onto the rear stay is grabbing the chain on the way past but it isn't, the chain is still on at that point... It's when I unfold the rear triangle that it's coming off...

I bet this is a common thing, any ideas?

  • No - but mine is doing the same thing - not every unfold but enough to be a pita.

    No gears - S1L

  • Is anyone using a Brompton X-Roller Easy wheel ezwheels extender ?

I find dragging my Brompton around ( e.g.rail stations ) difficult.

  • I saw those a while back when I first brought my Brompton and was thinking about purchasing them. Balked at the price tag!
Brought some Brompton eazy wheels from Putney cycles (seems Brompton have discontinued the style I have) will give them a go before exploring the extender option.
If you do get let me know how you get on..

  • They appear to raise the 'axle' bit which may stop the wear on the suspension block that I'm getting but its the swaying about of the bike when I'm pulling it along - like a reluctant dog on a lead - that I'd like a solution for. This thing seams like a logical idea but I don't know how robust it would be and ... at that price.

  • Thinking of selling my nature boy disc and joining the club. Question is 2 or 3 speed and to dynamo or not to dynamo?

Definitely getting steel, fenders, front bag block.
