  • put dynamo on nature boy

  • always the contradicting opinion amey

  • More bikes > less bikes

  • No dynamo, 3 speed for flexibility.

Battery light is plentiful, especially since this isn’t a bike you’re gonna ride for several hours.

    Recommend looking at 2017 Brompton.

  • why 2017 over 18 ?

  • Cheaper, and just as good.

  • Really? How much cheaper? I am finally going for a raw m3l but will look for the 2017 if it’s a bit cheaper and the same spec

  • Nice conversion. Having proverbially peaked under the Xmas tree (well, my wife's eBay account), I suspect I may be receiving a Brompton (2nd hand, obvs) on Dec 25th, but because fixeh is 4eva, I want to do a similar conversion to yours. Would you be so kind as to reveal what the chainline is on the Brompton, and did you have to use a specific chain tensioner? Cheers!

  • Buying mudguards, I have to buy the mudguards and the stays separately?? Wtf

And if you want to put a rack on, do you need the rear stays?

  • I've no idea what the chainline is on a normal Brompton - the drivetrain on mine is very unstandard. I'm running Campagnolo Record carbon square-taper cranks on a 115.5mm Centaur triple bottom bracket, and a Powertap track hub at the back. I think the track hub is a 41mm chainline, but that may not be useful information.

I'm using a standard 6 speed Brompton tensioner at the moment, albeit with a fixed normal jockey wheel at the bottom and no jockey wheel (just a spacer with a penny washer on the end) at the top. One of these days I'll get round to fitting the rather splendid NOV tensioner I've got along with some machined adaptor pieces, but that's not going to happen for a while yet.

  • Buying mudguards, I have to buy the mudguards and the stays separately?? Wtf

Yep, because that way you can choose between the standard stays or the titanium ones. Not that that's much of a decision to take, obviously.

  • I see. Was asking more from a view of using the standard crankset (for now), and just changing the rear wheel. I foresee a lot of tinkering, and thanks for the info on the tensioner, all very useful.

  • The 'Original Brompton'?

    The Bootie.

  • New drivetrain and a service and Cor mine feels fast again

  • It won't last :0)

In other news, Strava tells me I have now done 2,500 miles on mine since August last year.

  • Buying mudguards, I have to buy the mudguards and the stays separately?? Wtf

For a good reason, it's not uncommon for the mudguard itself to break and not the stay, or the roller break and only that need replacing etc.

It seemed daft to not sell them as a pack, but it make sense having replaced a lots of broken mudguard whose stay are still in good condition.

  • Another puncture. Going Marathon. Whats the new one that fits properly?

  • This one

    Other retailers exist, of course.

  • Someone should definitely fit these 2.125

  • Brompton don't recommend the Marathon Plus - the profile is higher, and it can interfere with the mudguards and the folding operation. I've got them on mine, and they do rub on the underside of the frame.

They're also very stiff and a bit of a bastard to fit. The are really puncture resistant, tho.

  • However, the new ones, the 'Marathon Plus for Brompton', like the ones I've linked to, are smaller and are specifically designed to fit Bromptons. They do ride like they're filled with concrete, yes, but I think @umop3pisdn knows that.

  • There’s a new one that’s actually slightly smaller.

  • Marathon Greenguard (I think) fit fine. But also manage to provide minimal grip and maximum rolling resistance. Not managed to puncture them in about 1500mi though.
