So ... can I carry a 4yo kid on an Omnium Minimax safely?
-
• #1281
If you want to come down to Bournemouth you can test ride ours at Velo Domestique or Harvey at Cycle PS just got one.
I would think you'd be fine, I've carried adults(+dogs) on my Minimax, Omnium don't make a specific child carrier but I know they have butchered kids trailers before and fitted them on.
Only thing with any Omnium is that the load is on top of the wheel so therefore the kid would be sat higher than a Bullitt but then Omniums are much easier to store/carry/steer.
Hope this helps

Been in CPH a lot recently and the dogs in christiana bkes scene is really pushing my buttons. Does anyone know where in the UK stock them and if they have pricing online?

Would love to, but the flight cost from OZ would kill me :/
I used to have a yepp seat and back rack since a while ago, and was planning to move onto a tag along, as kid's just getting too heavy and big for it. However, I have gone off the idea for now, as there's heavy traffic roads we have to cross, and we had a few bike related mishaps with her. I desperately want to avoid a 4th lot of stitches on her chin, so I am looking for other options that will let me keep an eye on her, unlike a tag along. Also groceries etc, n+1, etc.
Right now what happens is an avoidable 4 minute drive, and that is just plain silly.
I've been trawling pictures on insta for examples of kids on Omniums

and

looked cool.
I'm thinking some kind of back rest foam block and an inner tube or re-used car seat belt wrapped around the hips, and we could be in business.
Been taught how to build wheels and keen to have another go. Also I've got a spare Ultegra groupset and a wolf tooth road link lying about. Omnium minimax with drop handle bars and massive XT cassette maybe?

A friend of mine use a baby car seat on his Omnium (I guess they all have safety belts?). Jimmi who took the pics is a nice guy, I'm sure he could give you some tips if you would email him.
Oh, and the mini-max is awesome. Get one, you won't regret it. -

First step: check what the price for the frameset will be after AustraliaTax(tm).
Pretty sure I won't be allowed to spend too much by the household finance minister, but I think of this as an "avoid car journeys for anything >7km" kindo thing, so could pay for itself with grocery runs etc as well.

It's not a cheap bike, but if you offset that against car costs, surely it should make financial sense too. Good luck!

Nothing's cheap down here mate! But yeah, so far we've avoided 2 cars per household, , and that in itself is an achievement. If I get back to cycle-transporting mini-me, I think I can cut out 50% of the car use we have atm easy. Also: resistance training, right?

The Omnium mini max is ideal for shopping, if you get bread tray (the brown ones) you can easily fit 3 full reusable bags for life in them.
Jimmi uses one of his bar extenders and inner tubes to build that laid back seat thing which also means he can store a bag underneath it at the front.
As I said before the weight is higher up than on a bullitt but if you're a confident cyclist and your kid isn't moving around loads, omnium's are pretty easy to handle even with a heavy load.
Highly recommend sticking one of the massive XT cassettes on the back, helps with hills, moving at slow speeds around traffic and getting started when you're fully loaded.
I would also say that the mini max is super fun to ride when it's not fully loaded, much snappier than the full omnium cargo without sacrificing much of the 'max. load'

For when the kid has outgrown the car seat:
This woud still work with a mini-max plus extension bar (which slides in and out).

That looks rad. Mini me is waaaaay bigger than that kid already. She doesn't really need a full on car seat set up I think.
I am thinking if I gave her something to hold on to, maybe some side grips plus inner tube she could wriggle into with her legs facing front as well, and a foam block to rest her back against, it'd be alright.
Alternatively some sort of clamped on rails on the side maybe?

Omnium have just posted some shots of this prototype that might do the job as it appears to be able to slide further back for longer legs.

Looking at a cargo to carry the nipper about as I'm not keen on a rear seat on my Cross Check. It'll have to be a 2 wheeler as anything too wide won't work on our local cycle paths. So....child carrier? Thoughts?
