  • I'm struggling to think of a better venue to promote a Brit product, Oliver, and I honestly can't.

I was hoping to pop along to this, but an afternoon of gardening / fence wrangling round at Mother's has left me pooped :(

  • Looks like the electric brompton will be racing

  • That was tough. Average heart rate of 179.
Started in 200ish place and caught the 2nd fast group. Didn't get lapped, didn't know the last lap was the last lap so didn't sprint šŸ˜¬

Anyone know where I can find the results? Also, met and got a post-race picture of a forumite who recognised me from a saddle-swap years ago. Sorry I can't remember your name... PM me if you want the pic (or let me know if i should make it public).

Edit: it was @c4shr, I think? Good to meet you again!

  • A lot more people there on slicks, big chainrings and road shoes compared to the years at Blenheim.

The rain had washed away the feltip mark on my seat post so by the time I'd unfolded and set up everyone else had set off.

My 3 speed also finished the race as a single speed which wasn't planned.

  • A lot more people there on slicks, big chainrings and road shoes

    Guilty šŸ˜¬

  • 48th! Happy with that, only 6 places behind David Millar :)

Reckon I could've made up a few more places if I'd realised it was the last lap and actually sprinted...

  • Saw the electric brompton close-up on Saturday. It's pretty ugly and the front hub is sizeable, as is the battery pack.

  • Only two and a half grand though.

  • Well done on your positioning! Lack of riding, virus etc meant I was 'participating for fun'. I'll pm...

  • I guess the brompton electric is more about giving people the option of an e-brompton (and keeping the payment for that in-house) than actually doing it well. They are not going to fuck with the brompton frame to make it better for electrics, because that's the brand AND the one thing the factory is set up to do, and tube-sized motors and batteries aren't ready for the weight yet.

The weight thing is critical, which is why those stupid standing platform 'hoverboards' and scooters make sense at the moment (from a physics point of view). Also, design is important, so where an electric bike like the Vanmoof tricks out the bike and makes it useful, sticking an engine onto a Brompton is just bolting on some 2017 tech to a sweet 1970s frame.

  • @TurtleRecall you have Ultegra (6600?) cranks on your Brompton right? Any issue with the fold, can you use the folding pedal?

  • Yeah, I think they're Ultegra 6703? Had to be 130bcd to fit Brompton chainrings. Now got an Aliexpress 58t narrow wide ring, again 130bcd.

I had to file down the lips for the inner ring so it didn't foul the chainstay and had to get the BB shell faced to accept the HT2 BB (which meant I had to file a little more as it brought the crank in a touch). I don't know about the folding pedal as I put SPDs on pretty much straight away.

  • Apologies if this is a re-post but figured it's worth posting.

Half price Ortlieb O bag: https://bromptonjunction.com/product-category/clearance/

Most colours are still available. Just had the blue one delivered. Looks like it's never seen the light of day. Well pleased.

  • I'd recommend you read here first, but since you've already brought it, maybe you can read and see if your usage follows a similar pattern.

  • It may not be for everyone, but it's not THAT bad a bag.

  • I read with interest.
I've fitted the C bag to my S type brommie / yes, hacksaw = crappy plastic handle is no more.
    I don't mourn its loss.
The bag has been Scotchgarded to within an inch of its life, but to be fair it has only ever been exposed to the slightest drizzle between chez moi and Sainos (which accounts for most of the bike's use).
The C bag has been good enough for long (4 day) weekends away.
    Even when carrying gifts.
Or doing my weekly shop (that which Sainos don't deliver).
    Would recommend.
    Or buy another.
I don't think I'd throw it in a canal to test the Scotchgard....
You might just get away with that with an Ortleib.

  • I've got an S Bag and frame, so have no idea about the O bag, just know @Apone, so could feel his pain.
I'd suggest to anyone with a brompton to get an S bag, as it's pretty much perfect for my day to day needs, and is large enough for me to do impromptu shops without worrying too much..

  • I've not tried anything else, but can recommend the Carradice Stockport bag. Keep an eye on the Carradice ebay store, some factory seconds come up on there. I think mine had an extra rivet thing on it, it's been awesome and waterproof.

  • If you look back on this thread I originally hated the idea of Brompton specific luggage. I got a C-bag last year, and it rates as one of my best cycling accessories.

  • So few days ago I finally dropped some cash for a M3L 2017 and I have questions already. Thing is that I end up with Brompton after riding fixed gear and riding Brompton for a few days I'm already missing that more sporty riding/siting position and decided that I need an S type or whatever 25.4" flat bar. I have tried to search some stuff, but all I found that you need to change a stem to an S type, shorter cables, levers etc... is that true ? Can I just buy a flat bar with 25.4" clamp cut it to my liking and that's it ? I know that M type stem is shortest of them all but for me it's not a problem I just want to know if it fits and folds without cable shortening, I think small excess of cable length shouldn't be a problem ?

    Thanks!!

  • Start with a low-rise 25.4-clamped bar. Not too wide.

  • what you mean to start with a low rise ? You mean that a flat bar wouldn't fit or just because riding position would be to low with M stem/S bar combo ?

  • A flat-bar would fit, but there will be a fair amount of excess cabling and you may not need that low of a position. A slightly higher front-end makes it easier to lift the front wheel, give it a chance.

  • What saddles are you people using on your Brompton ? Any of you tried Road saddle or should I stick with Brooks B17/Team Pro ?
