  • I use both - was riding a Specialised Power Pro for a while, switched back to the Brooks B17 last week as it's a little bit friendlier on my suit trousers.

  • Cheapo "chaunts" smp copy. Been meaning to try a spare Romin I've got somewhere but can't seem to find a minute...

  • Genuine question: lifting up bike folded, isn't brompton's own saddle the easiest for this? My missus loves using SPDs on it and everytime I have to use it I switch it to flat pedals, makes me think anything non stock is disruptive to the usefulness .. no?

  • This has been my reason for keeping the stock saddle.

  • I loved having Keo Blades on it.... for a while... until I almost cut my right leg clean off while carrying it.

I was having a similar discussion with a friend who's just bought one and we both deduced that for our use (pub/work/anywhere we can't be arsed to walk) the flat, foldable pedals are the best. Were I commuting more than about 10km I'd DEFINITELY keep the Keos on there as the difference and comfort of cycling shoes is noticable, not to mention a hell of a lot more fun!

As for the saddle - Brompton's own boring standard saddle has formed recessed finger grooves in the nose, although they're a little close together, they are theoretically more comfortable to carry the bike with. Realistically nothing of that shape, size or weight is that 'comfortable' to carry in one hand!
I've found neither the Brooks or the Power Saddle uncomfortable to carry the bike with, although I can see why holding 12kg+ (39kg in the case of your ridiculous mobility scooter brompton) by the nose of some saddles could be detrimental to ones fingers.

  • Put a San Marco concor supercorsa light on mine, half the weight of the normal saddle. Not as comfortable to carry Brompton with, but I'll take any weight savings I can..

  • Someone mentioned that you made a conversion from M type bars/M stem to S bars/M stem, how did it go ? Everything folds, works and rides ? Because all I want on my Brompton now is a flat bar without changing cables, saddle, kojaks and black mudguards.

As for carrying a Brompton.. I don't need to carry it mostly, my commute is door to door on a Brompton only, no need for a bus, tube or train.

  • Where's the best place to get a Brompton serviced in east London, any recommendations?

  • .

  • It tends to be. I have MKS EZY on mine (they were given to me) so a decent middle ground but still not as easy as the folding pedal. I tried several saddles on my first Brompton, I get on fine with the original one on my second for the sort of distances I do with it, and yes it's more confortable to lift with it.

  • Brompton x Barbour

  • Has someone tried flat/spd pedals like Shimano A530? Not the smallest nor the lightest but may be a good solution (if the bike still folds)

  • I use the MKS Ezy SPDs and flats. Another option would be to use those platforms that you mount a cleat to.

  • Brombour

  • I use Time ATAC MTB pedals, folds down fine, work great with cleats or flat shoes.

  • Help! Can you fit mudguards to any brompton? specifically a S3E?

  • I don't know of Brompton not having eyelets on models they sell without mudguards... You should be fine.
Variation of rear mudguard occur when you have the rear rack otherwise I think it's standard.

@edscoble should be able to confirm...

  • It's not a problem fitting them, you just need to make sure you get all the bits as I believe everything (blades, stays etc) is sold seperately.

  • Thanks, will try and report back :D

  • So I'm getting a brompton through cycle to work scheme. What do I need to know?

Had planned to go to London fields cycles and try some out there.

  • Get 3 speed at least, dont spend on Ti rear triangle, forks or try and make it 'light', keep it as stock as possible. Get electric Brompton.

  • Go 6 speed. If you go S bar get Ergon grips.

  • I love my 2-speed personally. Perfect for nipping round town.
