I just put the axle as far forward as it went so it's essentially using it as a vertical dropout. I've got 35c cx tyres and there's plenty of clearance still. I had no particular rationale for doing so, though!

On my cross check I put the axle in the dropout where it gives the tyre (40c gravel king sk) the largest amount of clearance, that happens to be about half way up the dropout.

I'm considering a really bling Pacer build. Dura ace etc. I can see my riding changing over the next few years and this might fit the bill nicely. Anyone seen such a build?
-
• #608
Blue Lug has probably built something like what you're after.
-
• #609
Yeah close.

Just curious but why would you buy a Pacer and fit Dura-Ace? surely there would be cheaper much lighter frames out there, or a heavier group-set that costs less and isn't cancelled out by a heavy frame?
-

pacers are heavy but they're a good frame m8. Nice and comfy for a long day in the saddle and room for big 35mm tires without fenders. They're less bling than like a soma es or mr pink but that's part of the charm of seeing them built up really nice.

I would look at Dura Ace shifter but 105 everything else (or Ultegra), as it's usually the shifter that make the biggest difference.

My drunk thinking was this:
I'm getting older with increasing family commitments,
I love my steamroller,
I have a light nice bike,
I've been toying with the idea of an over specced steel frame for a while. A bit like putting a mad engine in a standard car or a Leica lens on a lesser camera body.I'm also considering Ritchey logic but I liked the idea of a surly stable.

That's as good a reason as any. If I get a skidder again it'd be a steamroller so I have a full compliment of surlys.
Shame the steamroller colours have all been shit since monkey butt red. -

It means if you have a midlife crisis, you can chuck all the dura-ace on something expensive and carbon, too.
-
• #616
I think I'm doing this at the moment.
Only just realised that it's a midlife crisis though.

Mid life crisis biek thread?

Mid life crisis biek thread?

Yeah my steamroller is the 'shit brown mixed with blood red' colour.

I'm soon to be the proud owner of a shit brown ogre to go with my gangrenous green lht. I want candy pink or summat else fun.
Liz has a 'battered and bruised purple' troll which is at least tolerable.. -

Lozzles...

I like the dichotomy of a weight weenie build with a solid steel frame, or another way of looking at it, the benefits of a nice steel frame with modern bits.

What's a pacer + DA going to weigh, anyway? My lightest bike is a little over 9kg (no gears) so I imagine it's still seem light to me!
how did you decide where in the drop out to place the wheel? i get good tyre clearance on either end.
