Picked this E61 525i manual up yesterday, needs a bit of work but I'm hoping to not hit Dammit levels... Famous last words!

Nice!
Were the 25i badged cars still 6 cylinder for that model year?
A big part of me really liked the idea of buying an old(ish) 5 series touring, but because life's already too complicated, I ended up going for new car.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with that one.

Yep, detuned N53 (and apparently possible to retune, if required). I looked at newer models but there's quite a gap in terms of age (and therefore price) where petrol went out of fashion for a while. I figure that even if it blows up and we have to buy another, I'll still be well off the +15k for a more recent model and miles away from a brand new one!

Came across this earlier, which others may find interesting.

It's quite weird. All the photo captions and some of the comments read like they have been put through a crap auto-translate.

That's nice. Quite tempted to do the same. You can get a well looked after 520d for £4500 here. Fairly high miles though, but that shouldn't be a bid deal on a BMW diesel should it?

The diesels appear to have more engine issues (timing chain, turbo, swirl flaps, fuel pump, depending on model) but I think the high milers will have already had that stuff sorted.

Apologies to everyone who's RAC costs are about to go up on my account 😂
Over 600 miles of towing, vehicle storage, 4 hotel rooms and who knows what else...

there is a funny scene at the start of some sitcom where guy aims a glance at camera, guy looks proud sitting at traffic lights in his sports car
lights change, sports car drives off leaving proud looking man in shot sitting on dilapidated bone shaker of a bike, he then pulls awayanyone remember that scene ?

That 355 has a weird clone stamp repetition on the vents.
Like the designer got his hands on an early version of PS.

Yup, behind the little dark windows. Oopsie. How bad?

How delusional would it be to think this could be a weekend runaround after £1-2k spent on it? #goeasynow

Seller looks like he might take sub 2k delivered and I'm tempted, always wanted a XJ6 and can't think of when I'll be in another position. Just trying to work out how cheap I can get it if I do throw in the towel to hopefully get back what I paid. Insurance is cheap on the other hand!

what's it like underneath? it hasn't run for at least 2 years.
you'll need to sort the brakes (I think the rears are a fucker on jags), a hose/fluid change and freshen up the ignition bits. then you are putting out fires. as long as the engine/box/suspension is okay, you might get away with it.
I'd do the minimum amount you need to do at each time until it is MOTd (ie leave tyres until last), so you don't lose much if there is something terminal.
Just been for a ride in the Kent Countryside, day dreaming about a Volvo 240 Torslanda with the engine/transmission etc from a 4.7 litre Cerbera after one went past sounding absolutely filthy.
