Different floors is a good thing! I hate those places with the same floor everywhere and no thresholds between the rooms. So vague and tame.
Do they meet in a doorway? Make the threshold match the floor in the room that the door opens away from and averything will be fine.

Oh yeah, totally agree; same floor throughout looks weird and institutional. Just a bit worried about the place being too 'woody'. Might go a different route: found some unusual porcelain tiles last night so awaiting samples. Thanks, all.

^ Looks like you had a good team in.
I need to block off a wall light but only temporarily, it's in the way of a bookcase I want to put up. Google suggests just screwing the wires into some connector block and putting a blank plate over. Is that all there is to it?
Cheers

Right on, finally some perspective!
Sorry to be a pain, but do you have a before series of outdoor pics? -
• #10231
Ah thanks; massive project and well done.

Nice Lotus (yours?)
Was there nowhere else for the satellite dish to go? -
• #10233
Great job. Though the satellite dish makes the whole project seem futile. Just buy them a Sky Go account and have done with.

Need a doorbell of some description, anyone fitted one of these smart ones that link to your phone? They all look a bit horrible but I can see the practical benefits...

I need a plumber in Brighton area to run about 2 metres of gas pipe and fit a gas hob, and replace an electric shower like for like.
What should this cost? My plumber is quoting £250 just for installing gas hob which I thibk is a bit steep.
-
• #10238
Is it replacing an existing hob? Is he/she cutting the worktop out and fitting it or just doing the gas stuff? Have you checked on the gas safe website they are registered?

Thanks for your reply @sacredhart. Literally everything is set up already, worktop is cut out and brand new hob is sitting there ready to be connected. Gas mains supply is 2 metres to the right of the hob. Units are already installed but chippy says it should be an easy run.
Oh, by the way you gave me a free purple Ribble years ago. It's still my dad's primary runaround, he uses it almost every day. Thanks.

Nice!
I'd get another quote you can use the gas safe website to find local engineers. -

Question for @dbr or any other makers on here. Is formica-faced birch ply suitable for an undermount sink? Instinct says no - risk of delamination over time - but I have seen it done. Asking for trouble?
If we do go with this as a work surface, who should we buy from? And is there a difference between formica and melamine? Ta!

• #10243
Yeah. That smell. Found what might be causing it.

Making some sort of kale wine I see.

Solid surface with an undermount sink.
I'd go integrated, seamless and (pretty much) worry free! -

If you seal the cut edges with something gnarly like PU varnish they should be fine. Just make sure there are no areas where water can collect and pool. If it all dries out after use it should be cool.
Get 18mm birch ply with one side faced in melamine / formica (they're just brand names as far as I know) and fake the 36mm edge by gluing and screwing (from the bottom) a baton of the same material along the edges.
If you're buying sheets and doing it all yourself Richard Russell is good, as is Neil Gotz - 07944 618881. He'll source, collect and deliver from the big guys like Laytham that don't want to do single sheets.
If you're getting them CNCed to size, Cut and Construct are the guys to go for.

So I just took off the rather grim wall lights and found this beneath. Just to double check since it isn't my house, could I just disconnect the wires from the light at the block and then leave the block in the wall with a blank plate over it?
I know you aren't meant to leave live wiring in the wall but the fitting will be used again. Cheers

I'm not mad on solid surface - Corian, Minerva etc - as they look plasticy, though I do appreciate their suitability for the purpose. They are also wildly expensive. Considering Dekton or Silestone and equivalents but the only floor tiles we like are £££ so may need to cheap out on the worktop (I know, I know - false economy).
-
• #10249
Yes. Just make sure that there is no exposed copper before you put that cover plate back on. Adjust the position of the wires if need be. Make sure the cover plate doesn't crush the terminal block, or force any wires loose when fitted.

Please help.
These two black pathches appeared after washing up.
Mrs Thrasher used CIF - left it for a short while and used a magic eraser after that and these stains showed up the following day..Any ideas on how to return wood to its original splendor?
