the high street is just a collection of middle class white people franchise favourites. Costa, Cafe Nero, Cote Brasserie, Zizzi's and assorted stuff shops selling locally sourced scented soaps, candles and hand woven dog clothes.

You could try Bickley area. More 'local' shops and quick trains into Victoria plus nice parks / Bromley common.

Or a novel idea move somewhere less established with no Costa and the like.

So like bickley. Where there isn't a Costa.

That whole area, of the Bromley umbrella which includes bickley, chislehurst, Petts wood, Bromley common etc is very tory tastic as op said. If thats an issue move to a less affluent area where the demographic are more likely to vote labour, and far less likely to have the middle class shops.

There is a third way - move to an affluent area with a healthy sprinkling of middle class guilt...

Or just except that you are actually middle class and move along. "Not you personally :)"

I know it's a Tory area - I live in Bickley.
The Tory vote, however is largely the elderly population who are obviously on the way out...

Chatterton Village (where I live) is a nice area with good transport links, local (non chain) businesses and a large park. You can also still buy a fully detached house with driveway and garden for less than £600k which is a minor miracle within the m25.

We've finally put an offer in on the place we knew we wanted last October/November... Fingers crossed!
