  • I have oval ring on my niner mtb. With nw tooth profile (I have nw cog also) the chain doesnt drop anywhere. There is slight change in chain tension but you cant notice it when riding as either (i) the upper side of the chain is (in theory) in constant tension when spinning from saddle, or (ii) when hammering up a hill the chain is in its tightest phase when you put the power down.

  • Good to know. Thank you.

  • oh and forgot to mention the important part: it is single speed with nw ring of course

  • You did mentioned it ;)

  • What's the chainline like on these 1x conversions? Do the aftermarket narrow-wide rings have some sort of offset to give a narrower chainline when used in the outer position of a double crankset?

I'm thinking about going 1x on my winter bike but it's 130 OLN so the ideal chainline would be 43.5mm (I think?), only I'm not sure what combination of crank and ring brands would work. Most manufacturers seem to deliberately avoid mentioning chainline at all.

  • You've got to remember that modern drive trains are designed so that they can be used at the extremes and sill be functional. So using big and big or small and small isn't any thing out of the ordinary. Remember that theres no front mech for your chain to rub.

    In other news ....
I took my cross bike on my club run and went out with the fast group, its got a 40t oval chain ring up front and a 12-32 on the back, and the only point I felt like I was lacking was on a long descent, 120rpm isn't my desired cadence, but I managed to hold the wheel of the fastest guy in the group.

  • Wolftooth are offset so they give a better chainline. As @Dogs says it doesn't matter that much with modern groupsets.

  • So do the sram ones

  • Anyone willing to advise me on the following. Wanting to get me my first geared bike in years. (some mountainbikeing more the 15 years ago)

Looking for something more sturdy to ride around near forrest and dunes, but get me around and commuting to work swiftly.

My interest has fallen for a BMC gf02 ultegra. The reviews seem really mixed, but the bike seems really comfortable and I like the idea of disc brakes.

Any other good ready to go options I should look into? My budget is 1500-1800 euro.

  • I have one which sits alongside my Croix de fer. I'm running both on the same tyres and although they are similar ish bikes they ride completely differently.

The BMC is way lighter and feels much punchier to ride. It's also smoother than the croix despite being aluminium.

Clearances are limited though and you'd probably need to drop to 32,s if you wanted to run guards.

Croix de fer has much larger clearances which may be better if you want to do more off road. It's a big comfy cruiser with a charm entirely of its own.

  • go around your local bike shops and test ride cx bikes. With that budget you can get a pretty decent bike

  • Sure, just trying to narrow my focus by asking experienced riders. ;)

Dantheman, so you would recommend? I notice the GF02 now also comes in carbon, woud that be a must upgrade compared to the aluminum?

  • Yup I love mine.

Haven't tried the carbon one but the frame design is spot on for alumnium.

    There are loads around though,
    Gt Grade looks good.

  • yours? fully excellent.

  • Wheels need destickering, new seatpost incoming. This things rides amazing.

  • Sure, just trying to narrow my focus by asking experienced riders

Wrong place buddy. Most people on lfgss spend more time browsing lurking and posting than riding.

  • speak for yourself

  • No water\rack bosses on the forks? Older version?

  • Good friend of mine, I'll pass it on!

  • It has fender mounts, but non of the others. This was the 2015 version!

  • I can vouch for Absolute Black that they are indeed offset too

  • What are the tyres? Rad btw

  • Clement Strada LGG. theyre a great mid priced tyre tbh, I get on with the well.

  • Thanks. Absolute black looks like a good option.

Anyone know if the spiders on the Sram 1x cranksets are different to the spiders on their 2x cranksets?

  • Not as far as I can tell. Bolt 5 is under the crank-arm- which just means you have to be clever with your bolts.
