The range of gear is not dissimilar to an old 5 speed block, so for some people they're happy with staying in the same gearing, other want a more precise ratio to get just the tight comfortable spin.
Personally a big jump can be useful to reduced the constant changing of gears = less wear and tear.
Edit: pretty much what @jontea said.

I think triples will make a comeback in NAHBS this year.

Or an 11t chainring with 50t cassette

There is a 50t cassette.

I heard it was 3 speed freewheeling cranks with a single fixed cog on the rear

as long erik nohlin says its ok

I built a bike with a triple one week ago, am I on trend now?

I am afraid you are ahead of it

How's it treating you? I absolutely love mine, need to get ridden soon.

• #695
Only done one ride (13 miles commute) and it seemed great, felt at home straight away, nice and stiff but the tyres softened the ride up!

Is that an oval chainring running singlespeed without chain tensioner ? How ?
-
• #697
The chain is always wrapped around roughly half the ring, same number of teeth. It only actually changes in tension very slightly at any given phase.
-
• #698
Thanks. So I guess those slight changes in tension are insignificant? Is it noticeable ?
Sorry I've never been really good at physics. -
• #699
I guess so too. Never rode oval rings myself. That's just my understanding of it.

its not something I considered until last night when I was setting the chain length (bought the chainring for 1x11) It does change quite a bit from either extreme - I just set it with a little bit of slack at the longest length
Whether you get it or not, some people just like the look of it, the simplicity of it, and , like me, aren't that arsed about gaps in gearing or a slight change in the all so critical cadence. But that's cool, because it's not compulsory to run 1x, it's just another choice. So run what you want fixed, ss, 1x, 2x,3x, because it's all just riding a bike so who gives a flying fuck.
Or summat like that.
