Kernel task is the main process of the mac OS
-
• #10653
Deleting it won't harm anything, right?

Google says if you put it the microwave for 30 seconds it might fix it. Make sure it's turned off though

yeah, kernel_task, damn autocorrect.
It's a known issue, but it's only become annoying for me in the last couple of days, and I'm not sure why.
I've found this link, where the guy disables it entirely..
http://blog.viktorpetersson.com/post/100148585299/how-to-fix-kerneltask-cpu-usage-on-yosemitehe writes below
"It appears that in case there is something wrong with the Mac, there is a chance that kernel_task will completely trash your system. For me, it was likely caused by a broken sound card.Since I was getting pretty desperate, I decided to try Rhys Oxenham’s suggestion, and simply disable the kernel extension for the particular model.
As crazy as this may sound, it did indeed do the trick. My laptop is now a lot more responsive, and kernel_task is no longer consuming my entire CPU."
Now I'd rather know what is making the kernel_task go crazy, rather than just disabling it, but am not sure how easy that would be to do.
I've been having troubles with my wacom tablet, so that maybe it, but the firmware hasn't changed on it, so not sure how to fix that without just stopping using it..Anyone else have any other thoughts?

I bought one of these cheap hub jobbies, but it started to melt away from the inside when in use.

Any recommendation for a solution that wont set the appartment on fire whilst the kid watches cartoons?I need both the hdmi, older usb and SD card reader but not necessarily in one device although simplicity of use is very welcome.

Which version Pro is it?
Check System Information > Memory and see what it says under "Status".
Also check storage, further down the list to see if any disks are throwing out errors. -

Think it's the 5.1, will do those when I get home and start it up. Hoping turning on and off will miraculously fix the problem. Slim hope I know..

When you turn it on, hold the power button down for a few seconds untill it beeps loudly and flashes the on light.

They are really quite cool.

It's also more powerful than the original too.

Some people say that stuff plugged into a mac can cause the kernel_task issues.
Does it happen only when the tablet is connected?
-
• #10667
There was no issue before and the tablet was plugged in. This has started happening in the last week or so, and I've owned and used the tablet for the last couple of years..
Will start up with it disconnected and see what happens -
• #10668
It's a 5.1, no issues with the memory or storage, just restarted it and kernel_task is at 1.93gb and climbing.
-
• #10669
so reset the PRAM, reset the SMC, booted it up in safe mode Kernel_Task is at 1.63gb, 149 threads, boot it up normally Kernel_Task is at 1.90gb, 157 threads.
Fucked if I know what needs to be done..
Anyone know of any mac places south of the river, that are half decent?

Mine's about the same and I've not noticed it slowing the computer down. When you say it's a 5.1, do you mean Mac Pro 5.1? mid 2010 tower unit. I've seen it come and go before, I thought it had something to do with indexing the disk.
-
• #10671
that's the one..
over the last week or so, computer slows, whilst opening programs, wouldn't open microsoft word, freezes, whilst playing web pages, all sorts.
I've got loads of RAM so not sure why it's happening, fan isn't blowing hard, don't have massive amounts of applications open, but it just keeps tripping over itself...
-
• #10672
Does it use a hard drive or SSD? That's the usual bottleneck.
-
• #10673
Only thing that fucks it up is the watch...
-
• #10674
I would get a backup and clone the drive if possible, you might have a problem with the hard drive, ssd would be less likely to fail this way but mechanical hard drive failure could be a possibility.
If you're not running ssd on that machine I'd be surprised :)
I wouldn't rule out ram problems either. Unless you've just done something drastic with the data and it's reindexing the whole lot.

+1. My bet is on storage or RAM.
I had a couple of RAM sticks go bad in an earlier version of one of those once but was alerted to it by a red light on the riser card...
kernel_task you mean?
Yeah, it's fucking annoying and nobody seems to ever know exactly what it is. Chomps cpu on my MBP as well.
