So. In anticipation of my new Mac I have been hanging out at the macrumors forum.
What a place!Lengthy threads of endless complaints about late tracking information and comparing specs and order dates.
Photos of how tight your sleeve fits your new computer.
And a host racking down on the machines by people who have not and do not attempt to use them.Amazing!

Yeah, lots of jokers on there...
The more I see these new machines the more I like them, the touch bar is REALLY GOOD.
Still struggling to justify buying one though... could go on holiday for a month for the price.

Buddy of mine received his on Monday. He's happy with it. I'm trying to sneak a play with it but can't come up with a legitimate reason beside "hey do you fancy a coffee so I can play with your laptop".

think this is the best place to post. I want to run solid works software on my macbook but my college can only provide me with the windows version. What is the best way to go about installing the windows software on mac? Virtual Windows? If so, any advice on what to/ not to do.

I use Parallels.
-
• #10412
+1 for Parallels. Way simpler than Boot Camp and can run everything side-by-side.
-
• #10413
going to try free trial for parallels then. thanks both.

virtualbox. am running a win 7 machine on my top spec mid-2015 macbook pro and can't even tell it's there/running at all if i detach the gui and run it in the background.
virtualbox is 100% free too. just need a windows license
play asia sell windows keys for the relevant version you might need for under 20.

Christ Apple Music is awful. Signed up for the free trial. Can't even scan my music to tell me what I might like. Simply asks me what genres I like from a very small selection, before letting me select "bands I love" from a list of shit bands. Now it's telling me I really want some Red Hot Chili Peppers in my life.
Is there a way to make it work good?

I couldn't find one, cancelled my subscription earlier this evening. I'll try Spotify next - please tell me it's less horrifying to use?

Spotify is great, love its recommendations. Having said that I'm about to get 6 months free Apple Music through EE, so was planning to cancel paying for Spotify to save 6 months of subs. If Apple Music is that bad I may end up quickly back at Spotify. Anyone got anything good to say about AM?
-
• #10418
Spotify is great, their weekly recommendations just keeps giving. I get about a song or two per week that is awesome and random enough to surprise me
-
• #10419
Read a load of guides about how to get the best out of AM last night, still no better. Could be great, just needs some intelligent integration. Spotify has always been better, but it's not able to look through my offline library and recommend on that basis. I still prefer having all my music saved down on my itunes - nothing fills my niche.

Tried Spotify years ago when it was starting but it switched to force you to log in via facebook so I said goodbye. Tried again recently and it's a revelation. The only thing I'm not sure about is quality of streams but for diversity of music and ease of use (especially across platforms - phone, laptop, Bluetooth speakers etc) it's outstanding. The only thing I'm having some difficulty with is compilation albums by 'Various Artists'. For example if there's a series of the same comps I can't easily find the next one in the series without typing manually but it's a small faff.

The glass / display of my iPhone 5 is, like, "coming out of the frame" - it started on the upper left corner, and was barely noticable, now it comes out almost 2mm.
Worried about this, so thought of some sort of case, that will hold it together, that will really clasp around the edge.Any recommendations? I only see these bumpers, and then really hardcore looking cases that make the thing like twice as big.
Ideally it should still be somewhat slick. -

Bootcamp. Super simple and better performance than Parallels.

Could be a swollen battery...
-
• #10424
Ha, fuck.. this is likely I've found.
Checked the serial number, and turns out I'm eligible to get the battery replaced for free -
if only the thing wasn't purchased more than three years ago..So it's a hundred Euros, or about fifty if I go the ifixit route, which looks somewhat complicated..

It shouldn't make any difference, no? If it's a flagged dodgy batch they should replace it anyway... My MBP was over three years old when the screen, GPU and logic board went but the serial number entitled me to free new bits...
Sumo's recommendation of turning it off and then turning it back on again has fixed it, and I use it because I signed up to the trial and then never cancelled, like most people I imagine!
