  • There rest of the bung came out with it, visible here. I just can't undo the stem cap from the expander bold. I think @Howard is right and the threads are stripped

  • Had a similar problem with mine, putting it back in and repeating removing it a few times loosened everything up. I think I ended up tightening the bung a lot to make it grip enough for the top cap to come off without pulling the rest with it

  • Non-'dale £5 parts bin replacement from Mud Dock doesn't fit. Every retailer with next day delivery is sold out of the proper replacement. Nothing to ride on my day off tomorrow. Next logical step is to set everything on fire

  • can borrow mine if you want and are desperate to ride tomorrow. would like back before weekend though :-)

  • Thanks man, but just about to head back in to town, apparently BW have some that'll definitely fit.

  • Worse comes to the worse you could use anything that will take the bolt through the middle of it and apply load to the top of the stem and whatnot. Then remove it when the stem bolts are tightened. Just be super careful with the stem bolt torque as there will be less bracing the steerer from the inside.

Sheldon also reckoned you could preload by force using your own weight although I've never managed it but I'm a 60kg weakling

  • Not as bad as I remembered it actually. Its a bit closer at the front but I reckon I still have about 4mm to spare. Mind these are Compass 28s, they measure about 27mm on Pacenti SL23s.

Me and my 75kg bulk gave it a go before heading to the LBS, worked (enough) to ride tomorrow. £2.50 FSA version from CRC is in the post. Cheers for the tip!

  • Just a tip for when it arrives, and so you don't have to wait for the answers here... if it just spins when you try and tighten it up, you'll need to tighten (before inserting it) it so it expands and takes a little push to get it in the steerer, it should work a dream then!

  • My CAAD12 with eTap and 3T Aeronova aero bars. Love riding it! :)

  • Next Hollowgram related question from me - how necessary are the very thin narrow washers that you're supposed to use with the crank arm to spindle crank bolts? My set of KP022 crank bolts ordered from Bike24 have arrived with two bolts but only one washer. Grrrr... If they are necessary, is it possible to buy them separately?

  • They prevent the crank bolt from chewing up the arm.

Never seen them sold on their own but stranger things have happened.

  • I've seen crank bolts pull their flange off when tightened down without the washers.

  • With a torque wrench I'll add.

  • Have you considered a bike fit?

  • I had the basic bike fit at the LBS. Why?

  • Bugger. Better hope that Bike24 send the missing washer then, otherwise I'll have to get another set of crank bolts.

  • Because you've got barely any seatpost out and a big stack of spacers under your stem. Seems to me like you might have considered a frame with a sloping top tube and longer headtube.

  • SL23s

So should be alright on a rim that's 19mm most def. Cheers for that!

  • You dealt with a salesman and not a bikefitter it seems.

  • Spending that kind of cash, I'd expect more than a "basic" bike fit.

  • Yeah....I know. It's after the fact though and I blame Cannondale's design. :)

They made changes on the 2017 model because they did notice this design "issue" especially on the smaller sizes (mine is a 48 - 2016 model) so they sloped the TT a bit more.

So if you compare the SEAT TUBE LENGTH and STANDOVER below for 2017 and 2016 (Size 48), you can see why I have so little seatpost showing (bummer indeed).

  • Does anyone happen to have a set of the Cannondale C3 bars (44cm) going spare? I've got them on a SuperSix and really like the shape - would like to match it on another bike. Or, anyone know of anything with comparable reach / bend / drop?
