Thanks to @Dogs, @Dammit and @Howard for the advice on bearing shields. Thanks also to @Turkish for the offer of some shields, but I'd already ordered some (together with the spindle and end bolts) when your offer came through.
Next question - why is the spindle extraction tool so expensive and hard to get hold of? Bloody Cannondales....

It's a shop tool - only native weirdos in the US do their own maintenance shiznit
and hard to get hold of?
There's been a few chunky changes made to personal of late, and it looks like they are tightening up on the supply of shop parts and spares to end users.
That said you can order it in from Germany it seems.

Will do 28's then

would be VERY tight, 25 on my 'narrow' Kinlin are tight with Red 22 brakes.

Think I've had it with my CAAD 12/BB30a/SISL2 set up. Forth visit to the bike shop which involved a full strip down, replacement bearings (the last ones had done all of 200km) and it's creaking again. Have people had better luck with the wheels etc conversion kits? I've got an old set of SRAM red cranks that I think I'll use instead.
What's the going price for used SISL2 cranks with spider-rings?

I'm running Compass 28's with Force22 brakes and its pretty tight but it works.

Can you snap a pic of the tightness for me please?

Are you in London? If so, I'd quite like to have a crack at getting it to work.

= I don't trust shops to get it right.

• #7039
check the QR :~)
actually mine creaks way less when its cold so I will probably just leave it til spring to sort out

Which bike shop? Either your frame is broken or your shop is goofy.

BB30. What could go wrong? Lol
;)

Tried to sort out a bit of play in my synapse headset, but the top cap just spins and doesn't come off at all. What the fuck have I done now?
-
• #7044
Unbolted the compression bung at a quick guess? There's two allen keys required - the larger size does the top cap, the smaller tightens the bung. I reckon you've undone the bung, and the whole assembly is now spinnin'
-
• #7045
Will give that a go, thanks!
-
• #7046
4mm bolt inside won't budge, although hard to get any leverage on the short end of the allen key.
-
• #7047
Loosened the inner bolt with the assistance of pliers on the Allen key, and everything came out as one. Can't unscrew the black top cap from the silver bit now, it just spins. Is it fucked or am I being a simpleton?

^ beat me to it
Weird. It looks like this inside...probably.
4mm pulls a pair of wedges closer together expanding the bung. Top cap screws on to the bung assembly.
Not sure why the 4mm won't turn at all : /

The rest of your bung is on the top of your fork crown (inside).

Check the threads, could be stripped.
He literally just told you.
