  • My skip (Latham) took couple if hours to arrive but we had loads of crap so it was worth it, i think £230. If a full skip is bit much then hippo bag. My shed was in stock so was next day delivery .. I'd get Vlad in and discuss before you make any decisions @ChainBreaker .

  • Used Latham too, they're ace.

  • OH FFS... here comes my next project.

  • writes erection
thinks, no, noone will. shurely not?

  • Hippo bags are a rip off in comparison to a proper skip, but that said why not just have a bonfire of old shed material?

  • I took my last shed (8x6) to the local tip in a Zipcar. Cost me £15 or so to rent it for a couple of hours. Just a bog standard Golf, not an estate, with the rear seats folded down and a bit of tarp down to make the cleanup job easier.

Just had to carefully disassemble the shed with a lump hammer.

  • Ha! you reminded me - I order a few rooms worth last month and just now done some more. Projects are never ending...

Replacing door in bathroom, new windows and back door (ooh matron!) being fitted at the weekend and using Keeklamp to build some more hanging storage in the spare room.

Also got some furniture on the way from the forums finest @dbr which includes bike hanging solution.

  • I started replacing mine but lost interest when the dimmer switches were too deep to fit and there were twice as many wires as expected in my old double sockets.
Currently need to plaster some drywall where I took a boor frame out, I imagine its going to be a bore...

  • Slightly left-field option: I have solar-recharged fairy lights strung up under the roof of my shed. Something like this.

Left field was what I was after - not really sure why.

@Sam_w - those mrbeams.co.uk lights look good. Do you know if they have a decent output/quality?

  • I got some of these cheap a few years back https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002FCGI8Y Seem to be decent quality. The stuff seems to be reduced on Amazon pretty frequently.

  • Some rubbish dumps will allow you to take a van if you call in advance. Walthamstow accepts them as I took a huge shed there.

  • ^^ I went for the ceiling light in the end. All of the creative options still ended up being a tenner and I wasn't convinced solar would work this time of year. I figured that for something I'd use most evenings (and some mornings) through the winter it was worth the extra £8.

Probably going to get a couple more if they turn out to be decent.

@ChainBreaker - Re the shed / skip thing. I'm a bit confused. How big is it?

First thing I'd do is list it on gumtree and ebay as free if you remove it. I know someone who ended up selling their shed for £50 with the guy taking it away vs their original plan of paying £100 for a man to remove it.

If that doesn't work I'd have thought you just dismantle it and take it to your local recycling centre / rubbish dump in one or two trips. As Greenbank said, even if you don't have access to a car surely a zipcar/similar would be cheaper.

    Sorry if I missed something.

  • Nearly all treated timber more than 5 years old will have been preserved with the 'tanalising process'. This involved loading timber into a pressure vessel, which pulled a partial vacuum, into which was injected the tanalising liquid which then entered deeper into the timber than any solvented surface treatment.

The active ingredient in the tanalising liquid was copper chrome arsenate.
Any of those three can kill you.
No treated timber should be burnt, ever.

Your local authority should have a separate collection point for treated timber, at your local main recycling centre.

  • See above^^

  • seen above

  • So burn it outside in a chimnea where you get the heat and all the smoke goes up and into your neighbour's window.

    Cheers for the tip.

  • Probably too late, but have literally ordered one for myself tonight, will be arriving tomorrow!

  • Thoroughly recommended if they voted 'brexhit'.

  • Also, don't forget to profitably use the ashes.

  • Ah. I've already had someone in to replace it. £300.

  • I spotted that (its the post I'd replied to) but thought that the knowledge might come in useful for both of us next time it happens :)

  • I bought some kee klamp stuff to make a clothes rail - issue is the the pre-cut rails come in 100mm increments. I now need to cut the pipe to size, is a jnr hacksaw going to take forever? Might an angle grinder be a better solution?

  • Seconded. Is awkward if you're cutting long lengths to raise the other end to the right level but nice clean cuts that take seconds.
