you can fit 3.0 tires on the front of these apparently!
-
• #4978
on the later ones you can, this is an early one, not a huge amount of space. 2.5 is tight
-
• #4979
Yup the new ones do 3.0 front and a 2.4 on super wide rims in the back. Iv got one of the very first ones, which barely takes 2.4 front and back on 25mm internal rims.
@cake your current setup will force you to choose better and smoother lines, and make you better at life ;)
Edit: too late. @platypus maybe you got a newer one?
-
• #4980
Ha. It does make me choose those lines, unfortunately once I've chosen them, I often miss them!
yeah, it's one of the first gen ones also.

Maybe, but for places like the Peaks, I'd always want some bounce. Plenty of the trails are mega steep and don't have much of a "smooth line". I go farily regularly as I've got mates in Sheffield, but I'm always surprised at just how technical and steep the riding can be (compared the relatively smooth flowing North Downs).
@cake - If you're on a budget, adding bounce tends to be expensive, but for the price, I've heard good things about these:
https://www.evanscycles.com/rockshox-30-gold-tk-100mm-29er-fork-EV200416Bike looks sweet though. Keep the rigid forks for less adventurous outings.

Agreed with you on the peaks. I head up there a few times a year, but as you say rigids will be kept for when I'm just dicking about in Epping etc.
Cheers, will have a look.

Cake, as already stated try a different tyre size, maybe a wider rim (if you have a spare front wheel) dropping 5psi will make a big difference.
Other options are a less rigid handlebar and softer grips, this can dampen down some of the vibrations.
Tyre pressure is a personal thing. I had to run 30-35psi on Hans Dampfs because i had skinny rims and was moving fast, the tyre would roll at lower pressure, this was on rocky tracks and i wanted to limit pinch flats. Didn't get any flats, did get a bouncy skippy ride.
On smoother slower tracks i dropped to 25psi.
Play around lots with tyre pressure, see how low you can go. -
• #4984
Yeah already done all of these! Same set up I was running on previous steel 29er.
Part of the reason for switching to the swift was that it can fit some bounce as opposed to my last bike which couldn't.
But yeah, completley agree with you on pressure. Let out a load whilst we were out and it made a hell of a difference.

Love my new carbon forks, really impressed

• #4988
yeh!
sold my mash sscx, rychtarski max, 50mm china carbons, two sets of cranks and lots of fixy stuff.
and stuff thats on the way:
x0 brakes, ab dm oval 32t, novatec 771 772, velocity blunt ss,still need to get:
forekaster front, something rear (maybe another forekaster, minion ss, ardent. depends what they have at the lbs), bars (dunno which angles i want so getting something cheap first), stem (dunno lenght), proper seatpost that wont fail. -
• #4989
minion ss
Hope the Niner has good clearance. The side knobs on that are pretty big. It's not a bad rear tyre, but I'd consider an Ikon or Crossmark.
-
• #4990
hmm ye good point. That aint the latest version so 2.4 minion ss might be quite a tight fit.
my favorite mtb lbs has all (and mostly) maxxis tyres, but as it is autumn they are sold out in some models. Might have to get double forekaster, which looks really interesting, although I dont have much mtb experience to say for sure.

• #4991
forekaster
They look quite good. A relatively lightweight 2.35 tyre that can handle a bit of wet will come in handy on UK trails for 9-10 months of the year.

UK trails
Am I right in thinking that you're not UK based?
-
• #4993
finland. and in helsinki we got roots. A lot of wet roots. And ice and snow, so wet weather tyres with reasonable mud shedding capabilities work quite well i'd guess :-)

feels like they've just through the paint but im paranoid
-
• #4999
no I wouldnt worry. looks great, did you sell your rych cx bike? :'(
im still on the lookout for a new 29er. if anyone sees a good deal on a large HT 29er along the likes of santa cruz highball or yeti arc please let me know. full build or frame only fine (would also consider a ritchey p29)
-
• #5000
good deal on ritchey p29ers at charlie http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/ritchey-p-29er-mtb-frame-11818-p.asp
Yeah you're probably right. Main reason for going carbon if I were to would be for more clearence. Not a huge amount on there at the mo
