I don't profess to know these things, but isn't the queen's 'salary' paid by the rent on the 10billion or so worth of property/land held by the UK, and doesn't 85% of said rent go to parliament anyway? Don't we pay our monarch a proportion of the revenue from the crown estate, and get to keep the rest? Surely we're still definitely better off in the long run?

Yes, the queen and the rest of them get their upkeep as a % of the income from the Crown Estate.

The point is; if it came about that monarchy was abolished, ceremoniously or otherwise, it does not necessarily follow that the Crown Estate would be handed over to them for their own benefit.
