Saw this too, looked like quite a nasty knock to the head.
Hope he's ok

As some of you may already know I was the victim of a hit and run last night. Thankfully Im fine, no serious injuries which is utterly miraculous given the terrifyingly mangled state of my bike.
What I would like to know is does anyone have any experience of dealing with this sort of incident? Are the police likely to be helpful or will I have to chase them up constantly? -
• #1730
Sorry to hear that, J. Glad you're OK. I have no personal experience, but judging from previous accounts by people who have wanted to rely on the police to investigate, they needed quite a lot of chasing. I think it really depends on the circumstances of your crash, e.g. is CCTV easily available/decent quality? I assume that you will both want the driver to face consequences as well as to receive compensation for your bike, and I suspect that you should try to involve the legal profession ASAP.

Thanks Oliver, I got very lucky but I seem to be perfectly fine.
The problem I have at the moment is I don't know who the driver was, Im relying on CCTV to get the details of the license plate. There was a witness to the accident who took down a plate number but it came back registered to a motorcycle in Manchester. The police seem to think theres a chance that the plates are false (the car had illegal window tints etc) in which case Im pretty much screwed but they also reckon that there was a camera that would have caught the incident. So at this stage Im relying on the police to chase up the cctv footage to make any sort of progress. -

Me again.
Poor split-decision filtering at speed to assume queuing car indicating left = for junction up road when actually it's for their house immediately ahead. Got through closing gap but hit kerb so nice slide along pavement. Bike ok, i've got sore left hip and a few cuts n grazes. Injury pics taken but not sure they're teatime viewing.
Annoyingly I was moving across from Primary and initially started to go right side but changed mind. Eejit.

As ever see the what to do in case of an accident thread, but there's no need to wait for the police to get the CCTV if you are OK doing some legwork.

Fucking boggled eyed, topless chav deliberately clipped me on a climb south of Bristol today. Flipped him the finger so he stopped, reversed, got out and then pushed me on to the verge while I unclipped. Driving a chav mobile with the reg FP09 FBK. King sized bellend

You spoken to the police about it?

Yeah, all in hand. Just got to give them a video clip I managed to capture

Rode past Bank junction today at about 1/4 to 7pm, 3 police cars parked around the middle with a Cannondale leaned against the post, tacoed front wheel.
Hope the rider is ok.

Just updated the rider down accident guide. If there are any suggestions for other info to be included in the guide then let me know.

Cyclist being knocked down by a motorist in Belfast: It was green for the motorist, the cyclist tried to cross using a ped crossing while it was red for him.
Other motorist stopped, first aiders present (me and another guy who was very good kudos!), ambulance called, I blocked the area from behind with my car and put the hazards on, witness statement giving to the PSNI by me.
Poor guy, he complained about a sore back, may have a broken collarbone and that's all I know. I offered help to the police to help fix his cycle if he wants.

Thanks @ojeffcott - super helpful.

Just saw something on Twitter about a cyclist hit by a bus on Farringdon St this morning, haven't seen any further details though.

There were a couple of posts in the commute thread earlier. Nothing in the Standard yet.

Glad there's no lasting physical damage!
1 - sounds like it might be PTSD. It's a normal reaction, but you might want to consider counselling. *
2 - ask your GP for a physio referral. You don't want to be taking random internet advice that could cause further damage.
3 - Most councils have some sort of reporting mechanism for problems on roads. They should also have policies in place for maintaining / checking roads, to make sure that they are in a suitable condition, including for people on bicycles. If you have legal cover (through home / other insurance), you could ask them to set a solicitor onto it.
4 - Heal up soon. Ballers is mindless and entertaining. There's a TV thread that has plenty of suggestions.
* Although we all had a little blub when Val went home...

1 - Is it ok to feel a bit scared about riding again after what initially felt like a little fall on a short journey which has spiralled into this horrible experience... will it change.. is there anything I can do to help? I went for a little walk last night and saw an ambulance with the lights on and ended up doing a random cry and it's all feeling a bit weird. I'm also wincing at anything cycle related on fb / instagram.
Of course it's OK. Follow how you feel and don't rush it. Reflect closely on what causes your fear. People who get hit by drivers often have an indeterminate fear that they can't address because the driver fled and wasn't found, judicial proceedings were unsuccessful or unsatisfying, the driver was rude and abusive, etc. You had an encounter with a problematic bit of highway; that expansion joint looks very open and should probably be examined closely. At present, it seems like a tramline, and what you experienced is the classic tramline crash. This is all very specific and I imagine should be workable emotionally, but as I said, don't rush it. It's really bad luck. Also, being in surgery like that for the first time can't have been easy, either. Try perhaps to deal with these things separately. If at any stage you can remember how you enjoy cycling, get back into it. Do cycle training if you need an additional confidence boost.
2 - Any recommendations for getting my belly muscles back to normal? Gonna be full of staples for the next week mind.
@bluerip00 is a forum-recommended physio who might be able to work with you on it or at least refer you to the right person.
3 - Would it be sensible to politely flag up this issue with the expansion joint in the road to someone at the council.. highways?? Is there a good way to do it?
You should, yes. This is right next to the A12. It could be that the local Council is the highway authority, or there is a small chance that it might be Highways England, as that deals with the A12 and their envelope could perhaps also include the streets directly adjacent. You could also flag it up with Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign.
4 - Any other tips / anything else I should be doing? Even if it's a good box set to crack on with whilst I'm off work.
Post more on here. :) Great post, by the way.
All the best for your recovery.

Sounds terrifying. Afraid I'm not really sure what advice to offer here (others with more experience will know) but I just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery and hope you'll be able/willing to get back on the bike soon, good luck
-
• #1748
No practical advice from me - except to take medical advice on recovering muscles etc, don't push it unnecessarily. Wishing you a speedy and full recovery, mentally and physically.
-
• #1749
wow - thanks so much for all the advice and best wishes it really means a lot and has been very helpful and reassuring too. Throwing it all out there and getting handy bits and pieces back feels like I have a bit of structure to everything rattling around and I'm better set to deal with how and when to tackle things. It looks like there's a few bits I can pick up at my GP when I go to have my staples taken out in the next week or so.
I've found the Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign group on facebook and I will try and post a note on there ASAP to hopefully help people fare better than I did on that junction if they're near there in the immediate future. I'll also get on to highways / the council soonish too.
Glad to here I'm not the only one with an OTT soft spot for Val! Thanks again.

Your accident sounds horrible. I hope you recover quickly both physically and mentally.
I shit my pants every time I ride over tram tracks. There's a diagonal set on my usual weekend loop but after reading your story I'm going to find an alternative.
Thanks. I've still not seen an X-Ray as yet! My rehab has gone very well though. I'm walking already and should be on the bike real soon. Can't wait!
